: Converting from 6.5TD to a SBC "questions/checklist"

Basically I want to do a straight forward GM conversion and seek help from anyone that may have done the swap. I have a 1995 Chevy 3500HD with 6.5TD and 5 speed NV4500.

Also have a one piece rear seal small block with Tune Port Injection ready to go.

1) Will the SBC bolt into the current 3500HD 6.5TD frame (motor) mounts

2) Will a 454 bellhousing (circa 1986) accept the NV4500 input shaft housing diameter (ie a T5 won't).

3) What portions of the 6.5TD clutch setup can I use with the SBC, (have SBC flywheel)..can I use the clutch, pressure plate "and the hydraulic throw out bearing with the old syle bellhousing".

4) What misc challenges did you run into wiring up a gas engine in a diesel cab.

Will be using a Camaro speed density (730) ECM and intend to re-pin the wires under the dash into the Camaro ECM.

I assume the that NV4500 has a 40 pulse VSS, just like the smaller NV3500? Do have a MEMCAL programmed for the 5sp NV3500.

Thanks

The only thing I learned so far is that I need a SBC/BBC bellhousing (which I have Part #460486) and can use the clutch, pressure plate and hydraulic throw out bearing from the 6.5TD. Will also need a SBC flywheel (which I have also).

If you use the new style motor mounts (shell looking type) on the SBC they will mate up with the 6.5TD rubber frame mounts.

In my case I plan on installing a 350 tune port engine, so I'll have a little more wiring to figure out. Plan on installing a 1227730 ECM (tune port) and repinning it for the OBD1 sensors. Will run a 2 speed electric fan.

May just mount a gasoline saddle tank since the diesel tank doesn't have an internal fuel pump (ie lift pump instead)..but could run an inline also.

FYI: I just started a web page dedicated to the 3500HD truck www.3500HD.com (http://www.3500HD.com) and plan to document the change over once I do it.

10-4..and since my last post I learned that the 6.5TD bellhousing will bolt up to the gas 5.7. I just need a flywheel for a one piece rear main small block (ie externally balanced).

Other consideration: the 5.7 fuel tank, tank wiring, instrument cluster?

Don't have a lot of info there yet, and plan to document the 6.5TD to 5.7 swap on my 3500HD web site: www.3500HD.com (http://www.3500HD.com)

Is '95 OBD 1 or 2? If it's 1 the instrument cluster should work, but you definitely have the wrong tach for a gas engine. I'd go get a cluster out of a gas truck. As far as the fuel tank, again, I'd go to the wrecker and get one out of a gas truck with the pump and all.

I am trying locate a complete 88-95 (OBD1) Chevy/GMC truck with gas engine to do a body, wiring, bumper, gas tank swap onto the 3500HD chassis. It's been tough locating a regular cab truck with solid cab corners..but I'm in no hurry.

If you are selling it, California is just too far away. I do have (2) cabs for sale or trade. One is 1998 1500 4X4 extended cab (mint condition) and the other a 1995 3500HD "diesel" reg cab (very solid). You can see them by visiting the link in my signature below.

Im not a h8r its neet to see folks using thier brains. Im really trying to understand swapping from a 6.5 TDI to a SBC. specially in a 3500 Maybe a 454 just cause your a gas hawg like me and love the gas BBC rumble. Hell I had a solid roller 454 on N2o in my 72 blazer for over 10 years before the 6.6 swap. Just thinking out loud

Just building a Toy, I have a barn full of tune port injection (TPI) setups & small blocks. The TPI engines are really strong pullers and pretty good on gas, (& just look gnarly) ..so I just want one in the truck.

Kinda like putting a SBC in a 32 Ford hotrod, the Ford small block is a great engine...but the SBC is more common, more parts available and just cheaper to build.

Now if I was building a serious work truck..then I would put in my extra 454, but I would rather put that in my 33 Chevy!

6.5's are hard to find with low hours and are not cheap ,454's are like a tap on your pocket .both are perfect for the 3500 dually ,the 95 5.7 is small ,maybe to small for A 3500 I'll soon know. all thats left is the fuel oops gas tank & pump harness .I have a 6.5 core for sale broke crankshaft ,webs are ?able cheap,I'm in CA bay area.and yes diesel rules .
