Let's see what your truck pulls, tows, or hauls. Here's mine. It's an 2007 Jazz 31' 5th wheel.

28' Haulin car trailer, extra height. I put everything I own in it usually (military DITY moves) and for a single guy, it works AWESOME. My 99 SS takes up most of the space/weight capacity. If I were more more furniture, I'd have to make a step up, but for now it works well.

BTW- I've towed this a few times. Hardest conditions= 02 2500HD with 175k miles, Colorado altitudes, 95 degrees, cruise control on 65 mph, A/C on, Edge on level 1- no problems! Even with hills, I think it downshifted to 4th TWICE. Weight was 19.5k overall (10 on trailer, 9.5 on truck). The Edge, the P3, and the airbags made it easy. I did this all while getting a hand calculated 10.0 mpg!

What is up with that ladder sticking off the roof like that?

Factory foldable ladder. In storage position it raises up and against sidewall. Nice idea but a pain in the trees..... I've got a mod planned to reduce the height but still keep most of the ladder intact/in place.

Have you cranked that around far enough to see where it would hit on level ground?

Lets just say you don't want to go that far but yes it will go more than 90* backing up easily without touching the cab. On flat ground hitch runs out of rotation before you can hit. One of great things is that with the 8.5-9" bedrail clearance plus the ground clearance of trailer I am not limited to flat ground:D My trailer is definitely not a freeway queen. The pictues are from a trip in a civilized campground with 12' wide roads. This hitch is the "cats meow" for tight maneuvers using a SB truck/FW trailer. It is an expensive hitch but after towing with it - I won't ever go back to a manual slider. No worries about getting into and out of fuel stations that aren't set-up for trucks. Right hand turns in traffic don't need 6 lanes either to avoid bruising the curb side trailer tires as I can go deep into intersection and cut the turn hard (Slowly of coarse) unlike a non-moving hitch set-up SB truck that needs to make a gentler arc turn.

Mine is an 1150 which they will strongly suggest having a dually for as it weighs 4000lbs empty and has a height of approx 10' to the roof line not including the AC, etc. The slide is a 24" full wall slide, My wife and I camp with our two boys and have plenty of room.

We scaled at 17k total on the way home after burning a few hundred pounds in fuel, food and firewood. The D ranges were within 200 pounds of being beyond capacity... and that was on the way back. So Im sure it was over on the way down, pumped them to max and checked the temp every stop, worked great.

Bet ya a beer your way heavier when toys, propane, water, fuel station and gear are loaded. Believe that trailer has an 18K GVWR.

Its a 2008 373. The GVWR is only 16K. We currently don't have any toys to put in it of any size...typically tow it empty except for fuel for the gen. I am not doubting its heavier than the 12,500 at any time:) it is big, but until I can get a dually for under $50K....I'll have to make due with my SWR 3500.

You don't need a dually by the numbers (and not even the dually disciples can argue that), the 2011 3500 SRW trucks are rated to 11,500 GVWR with a payload/pin capacity of 4200 lbs in crew cab 4x4 form. Easily enough to handle the trailer, even if you're at max 16k trailer weight which sounds unlikely.

Here is my question.... How many people pulling that much weight actually have licenses to cover them? In Arizona any trailer weighing over 10,001 pounds is required to have a CDL. I am just curious as to how many are actually properly licensed... and combined truck and trailer weight over 26,001 lbs also requires a CDL. So who is actually legal?

Arizona state CDL study manual. Just did a google search and this took 8 seconds to find, "A vehicle towing a unit with a manufacturer's GVWR of more than 10,001 lbs." In the state of Arizona is required to have a CDL.

If you go look it up in the actual manual ( you can do this online) it is found on page 11 of the CDL study manual.

Can you post a link to where it said that?

It wouldn't fit any class of CDL that is listed in the AZ CDL manual.

The CDL is divided into three classes of license:

Class A: Any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more) provided the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

Class B: Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess 10,000 pounds GVWR.

Class C: Any single, or combination of vehicles, with a GVWR of less than 26,001 pounds or a vehicle combination less than 26,001 pounds, but that either is designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver, or is used in the transportation of materials found to be hazardous for the purposes of the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act and which require the motor vehicle to be placarded under the Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR part 172, subpart F and 42 CFR 73.)

In Washington State there is an RV exemption that negates the need for CDL on RV truck/trailers and motorhomes.

Each State and Province is different on how they handle Commerce/Farm(AG) Commerce/Personal Use(RV). There is no one answer for all the states and provinces for a 10001# trailer behind a pickup....

A combination vehicle with a gross combined weight • rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, if the trailer(s) has a GVWR of 10,001 or more pounds.
A vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers • (including the driver).
Any size vehicle which requires hazardous material • placards or is carrying material listed as a select agent or toxin in 42 CFR part 73. Can you highlight where it says you need a CDL solely because the trailer is over 10k?

If you did need one what class would you need?

Did you see the flow chart in the book?

LilWic

You don't need a CDL if the trailer is over 10K only if the trailer is over 10K and the combined weight of the truck and trailer are over or capable of being heavier than 26,001 pounds. We have several CDL drivers for work (all vehicles are DOT compliant) and have been throught this many times. I was pulled over once at a weigh station and weighed (in a one ton van) I was over weight when compared to door sticker, but they could do nothing because the total weight was well under the 26,001.

javelina80

Well I maybe be wrong. However I asked a friend who is a DPS officer and he said any trailer over 10,001 #'s required a CDL. It is kind of confusing to read it all. I occasionally tow ever that weight limit, so I was concerned. That is how he explained it to me. I am not saying he knows all, but he should know more about it then I do.

That's how I understand it, my 15.6k gooseneck is under CDL because the truck is only 9.2k, totaling 24,880lbs max allowable weight. I'm surprised they didn't mess with you for being over on the sticker weight.

To help find out if you need the CDL or not look at that flowchart on pg. 9 (pg 11 of the pdf file). If you are towing with the truck in your sig you would need a trailer rated for more than 16,800lb to put you into CDL territory. (9200+16800=26000)

Here you go
http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/cdlexempt.html

Those guidelines are the same as Fed:

You must have a commercial driver license (CDL) to drive any of the following vehicles:

All single vehicles with a manufacturer’s weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more.
All trailers with a manufacturer’s weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more, and a combined vehicles’ gross weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more.
All vehicles designed to transport 16 or more persons (including the driver). This includes private and church buses.
All school buses, regardless of size.
All vehicles used to transport any material that requires hazardous material placarding or any quantity of a material listed as a select agent or toxin in 42 CFR 73 (http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/waisidx_07/42cfr73_07.html).

The exemptions may be slightly different but the requirements are not like California in that you automatically need a CDL over 10k, the basic requirements are the same as the Fed guidelines.

whitecc,

It's the 24' trailer I was telling you I could get some measurements off of while at work today. It's got two 7k axles. Sucker pulls like a dream. I'll get those measurements sometime today if I ever get a free minute besides lunch.

As much as I love Dmax's you are not going to find one that could handle this load. Power yes, truck no way. This is right at 28,000 lbs going down the road. Belongs to my friend. It one of those heavy duty Ford 450's. Hell of a truck. That's a 21' fiberglass boat with trailer and a 250 hp 4 stroke outboard hanging off of it.

I usually pull my 5ver and the boat at the same time, my 07 LBZ loved that load.. The John Deer gets moved several times a week but with the trailer it only weighs 10k, No issues for the dmax. Going to take a short trip this weekend with my new 3500 Lmm pulling the 5ver and the boat. Boat and 5ver together will be 16-17k. The old LBZ never hesitated with that load,,Anxious to see how the LMM will act...

Now that's called ingenuity! I'd imagine that the boat would want to "fly away" at higher speeds with it pointing up in the air like that??

how the hell do you get the boat up there and off there? Subman gets on one side, his friend on the other and they just lift!! :D

I'd imagine ramps and a winch are used in the process.......

It sits on it's own loader, pulled up by a winch and the ramps slide into the bed slick as hell. I have some great pictures of it but this worthless ****ing site will not let me download them because it says they are already downloaded in another thread an old one the Duramax vs. Powerstroke vs. Cummins thread, but be damn if I can find them.

Ive hauled some 48 foot park model trailers. the most i pulled was an overloaded enclosed car hauler truck and trailer tipped the scales at 36,700 that day. drove it 1800 miles. Oh yeah with my odometer right at 705,000 miles. i wouldnt trade this truck for anything

No problem, I remember seeing a setup like this a long time ago and always thought they were an interesting way to get two trailers to the same place at once.

Because it wastes server space and bandwidth. Just link to them ;)

Scrap generators from my friend... was told the load was about 10k lbs, turned out that the total weight was 25,600 lbs, trailer had over 14k lbs on it, it weighs 4k empty. I guess I built the trailer pretty well, as it took a 4k lb overload, and I will never take someones word on weight again.

Truck is a 6.0/ 5 speed 2500
