: I now have a tachometer in my van!

I just finished puting an Autometer 0-5000 rpm diesel tachometer in my van! I just thought I'd give a few details here in case anyone is interested.:)

The whole idea of this thing was pretty simple actually. The gauge had two wires that attached to the signaling device you attach to the alternator, one wire for 12V power, one for ground, and one to light the gauge.

To get the signal to the tachometer, they include this really big hose clamp to strap this little gadget on the alternator. Two wires from this thing go into the cab and connect to the gauge.

To power the gauge, I tapped into the cigarette lighter wires because they were easy to access. And this is were I did a dumb thing. In a moment of enthusiasm, I reached in there with my wire cutters and cut the orange wire and black wire at the same time.:o: The little spark was kinda fun but I felt like a moron.:Wedgie: I did find out that the cigarette lighters aren't switched though. Oh well. I then went to Kragen and got a rocker switch to turn the power off to the gauge when the motor's turned off. Finally, I replaced the 25 amp fuse.):h

Ground for the gauge was easy to find. There was a bolt in the firewall that was already grounding one wire so now it's grounding two.

The hardest part of this whole thing was routing the wires around by the pedals and getting the hose clamp around the alternator. There's just not much room in this van around the motor!

Good job - you might also post part numbers for future reference, as any new member with a van will want to know more................

Good idea. The only thing I bought besides little electrical connectors was the tachometer, part number 2888. Here is a picture of it: http://www.autometer.com/cat_gaugedetail.aspx?gid=2602

I didn't buy any mounting parts either, just drilled a big hole below the HVAC vent that's to the right of the steering wheel.

VanMan,just connect the wire for the gauge light to the dash or head light circuit. Then it is only on when your light's are.

I just finished puting an Autometer 0-5000 rpm diesel tachometer in my van!

Ive got the same in my truck. Not bad at all. likes to loose accuracy a bit when running accesories.

Would be better if it had the numbers like the one in the post above. (5,10, 15) instead of 1,2,3,4,5. Just my opinion though.

You'll find out quickly once your batteries stop taking a charge, the belt is slipping, or the alternator quits on you, the tach will stop working!

overall i like it though.

VanMan,just connect the wire for the gauge light to the dash or head light circuit. Then it is only on when your light's are.

Thanks for the tip. I just left the light wire not connected because I didn't know where to splice it. I'll have to look around a bit more and find that place.

Ok, ok you don't have to yell.:D I think I'll be able to snap a picture of it tomarrow. Don't get your hopes up too much, though. It's just a big hole in the dash with a gauge sticking out.

Would this style tach work with a power signal coming from a speed sensor on the oil pump drive?

Here's a few pictures of the installation. You can see the swtich above it to disconect it from the unswitched cig. lighters. It's not in the perfect place for the driver to view it, but it works.:thumb:

The pump-drive speed sensor makes four pulses per crank rev, just like a gas ignition distributor, and would need to be amplified.

Dr Lee has an article in the members area on the DP on how to do that..

This particular tach counts pulses from the alternator, so would not function - check to see if they offer it in a version for a V8 distributor output
