GM lets everyone in on its discount <!-- endheadline -->

All buyers can have the same deal that its employees get <!-- endheadlineb -->

General Motors Corp., hoping to clear dealer lots of growing numbers of unsold models, is trying yet another tactic to drum up sales.

GM will announce Wednesday that it will offer all buyers the same discount that employees get, giving consumers nationwide thousands of dollars off the price of every 2005 car or truck except the Chevrolet Corvette, a person familiar with the plan said Friday. The employee discount varies by model.

The new program, to be unveiled publicly the same day that GM is expected to report another weak month of U.S. auto sales, could help trim high inventories of cars and trucks. That particularly means full-size pickups and sport utility vehicles, sales of which have suffered due to record high gasoline prices, dealers said.

Weakening sales for GM's aging truck lineup, including its most profitable models, were a major reason why GM posted a $1.1 billion loss in the first quarter, its worst result since 1992.

Dealers contacted by the Free Press said they would welcome the program.

"If that's what they're doing, I think that's great," Lynn Thompson, co-owner of Thompson Pontiac-GMC-Cadillac-Saab in Springfield, Mo., told the Free Press in a telephone interview. "I'm not selling as many as I need to," he said about GM's large SUVs.

A GM official declined to comment.

With gasoline prices hovering at around $2 a gallon and GM's truck lineup several years older than competitors' models, many of GM's most profitable vehicles sit unsold at dealerships. Dealers have enough supply of the Cadillac Escalade SUV, once one of its hottest models, to last 139 days at the current selling rate, according to Ward's Automotive Reports. GM's preferred rate would be about a 70 to 80 day supply.

The days' supply is even higher for some other models, such as the Pontiac Montana SV6 minivan, the Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck and the GMC Yukon XL SUV.

"GM still has to clear excess inventories, particularly of their trucks. The new incentives suggest that sales were soft in May," said David Healy, an automotive analyst with Burnham Securities, which manages mutual funds and large individual investors.

One reason GM may be anxious to move out the older trucks is to make room for a new generation of large pickups and SUVs, code-named GMT-900, expected to hit dealerships early next year.

GM executives have said in recent months that they hope to back away from offering large incentives on their vehicles, which analysts said has weakened the strength of some GM brands and hurt the trade-in value of GM vehicles.

Over the last two months, GM's Hot Button Event promotion gave consumers the chance to win one of 1,000 GM cars and trucks when they visited a dealership. For the many consumers who didn't win a vehicle, GM also offered a $1,000 cash bonus applied to the purchase or lease of a new 2004 or 2005 model year GM car or truck. "It's driven a lot of traffic in, but I haven't sold a lot of cars off it," Thompson said.

With the new program, GM appears to be returning to the tried and true model of keeping incentive programs simple and compelling, the same formula that helped spark sales shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks.

"I think maybe some buyers have been turned off by fairly complicated incentives, where there are five or six options," Healy said. "Maybe it's a K.I.S.S. program ... Keep It Simple Stupid."

Last November, with interest rates on the rise, GM unveiled its Lock 'n Roll promotion, offering consumers the chance to lock in a low financing rate on both a new vehicle and a second GM vehicle in a few years. But dealers said the offer was too complicated, and GM officials acknowledged it failed to meet expectations.

GM's U.S. sales are expected to drop about 5.7 percent in May, according to Ward's. Through the first four months of the year, GM's sales dropped nearly 5 percent.

Even as sales have dropped, GM has favored cutting inventories by temporarily shutting its plants in tandem with its incentive spending, according to a report issued this week by John Casesa, who studies the auto industry for investors at the brokerage Merrill Lynch.

"Market-share losses, however, continue to undermine GM's efforts to get its house in order, and year-over-year declines in production will likely be the norm through the end of this year, until GMT-900 production begins to ramp up," Casesa said.

DETROIT -- Now everyone will get the General Motors employee discount - at least for a month.

According to dealers, GM will offer every customer the chance to get a vehicle at the employee discount rate, starting Wednesday, June 1.

Not all details of the program are known, including whether the new discount replaces or is in addition to cash rebates. The deal applies only to 2005 model year vehicles.

GM has been pushing a variety of discount programs to its employees and suppliers, and allowing them to extend the discount to a limited number of family and friends. The new program greatly expands the scope of the discount, particularly to areas of the country where GM does not have a large presence.

The incentive means customers will be able to get a vehicle at a predetermined percentage below the dealership invoice price. Some dealers say the discount can amount to 4 percent off the invoice price.

The program will cover almost every GM vehicle. The Chevrolet Corvette is excluded.

According to GM, the employee discount is not a fixed amount, and the percentage varies per vehicle.

GM is expected to announce the program Wednesday.

GM released a news bulletin this afternoon. Just about ALL 2005 GM vehicles, delivered at participating dealers from 6/1 to 7/5, will be priced at the GM employee price (GMS) - for EVERYONE. The GMS price includes all applicable rebates, but does not include taxes, title, and dealer fees.

This is a killer deal. It saved me over $8,000 on my 2004.5 loaded GMC Sierra 3500 SRW.

Bummer. Now everyone can be as cool as I am.

Sounds about right- If your new truck prices out at @$50,000, your discount will be right around $8000.

This is excellent I wish that I had the money to buy this year instead of next. Hopefully, GM will offer this again.

Just out of curiosity, will the GMS discount apply if you 'special order' your truck (like I want to do) or does it apply to dealers existing inventory only?

They are trying to clear the lots, I dont think it will apply to ordering, because the GMS price deal will more than likely be over by the time you received your order anyway.

I have been looking for a few months at a new truck, and searched through the net and found the exact truck I would like, a Black 3500, 4x4 with everything, D-max, Allison, crew cab, DVD, sunroof, well, couldn't have ordered any more. The sticker was 51,000 or so and with the GMS discount and my 500 military discount, I could have been out the door for 40K. Which is a steal on this caliber of truck. But they would do anything with my trade, so I continue to wait and hopefully, someone will buy my trade, so I can get into a new truck.. Man, what an awesome truck. Scotty

The "GMS for Everyone" program is a bigger deal on Duramaxes than on most other GM models, for the following reasons.

In general, what GM has done is reduce rebates on most models and is paying out "memo" money (additional money given back to the dealer on GMS transactions) in lieu of bigger rebates. So, it's about a wash for GM on incentive money, and they have a great marketing opportunity to hype up this deal.

That is the case in general, BUT, with Duramaxes, rebates have actually gone UP from May to to June, by $500 (at least for us here in the North Central region). And GMS pricing alone is a big deal to the public on Duramaxes, since dealers typically make more profit on Duramax sales than gas truck sales. So now everyone gets both the GMS price and a bigger rebate, quite an outstanding deal.

For people who are already GMS, there's one big key benefit to this program too. You can now use any GM Card with the GMS price! I know there are lots of GMS folks out there with money sitting on their GM Cards that they can never use. So now you can do that too.

If you're thinking about buying a new Duramax, now is the time. If you're thinking about selling an '04 Duramax, now is not the time.

This my 1st post and what better way to dive in than talking about buying our new truck! The GMS sale is what got us. We're Ford people, used to have Chevys, too many problems (in heavy use), went Ford and never looked back. Until yesterday that is....

Our quick story: We almost bought a new '05 Ford SD -- ordered it just the way we wanted it, waited 9 weeks, then it arrives with 70 miles on it. Sorry, but when I order something, I expect a little more customer care than that. We walked from that deal and figured we'd keep our '99 PSD for a bit longer....

The GMS deal is great, and it was hard to find (like within 1000 miles) the truck we wanted, so we were down to 2, one about 50 miles away and one 600 miles away. The dealer closest had a suweet LT trim model and knocked another $400 off of GMS even! Then we added our $3100 of GM Card credits and it was one heck-uv-a deal!

What we got: 3500LT LB/EC 4x4 Dmax/Ally with bucket seats and as near as I can tell everything but the sunroof and rear slider in it. $32k and we couldn't be happier!!! Oh, it's summit white and grey inside...

My guess is Ford and Dodge are re-thinking their late year sales promos right about now...

The deal with rebates does apply to the 06 duramax I was told. Go to davesmith.com and check it out. They told me that an 06 duramax slt fully loaded would be $36,300.00 after all the rebates. They also said it would only be good for the month of June, unless anything changes. That price was before taxes.

You will not find an 06 GMC in June. (This month)

That is WHY the GMS ends on 7/5! Right after change-over the new trucks start coming down the asmy. lines. The new trucks probaly won't have any discounts / rebates for awhile as GM will want to see how good the sales are for the new models. Howard

Jimbo,

You did not get screwed at all. Rebates and incentives change like the weather. You agreed to a certain price, and got whatever was available at the time. Timing is everything, and sometimes you get lucky. Be happy with your deal and forget about what you could have gotten by waiting, because it doesn't really matter now....Happy trucking:)
