: pecking or knocking noise
blazinmax 10-27-2009, 07:53 PM truck still making a knocking or pecking noise. sounds like valves or rods knocking or something like that. doesn't do it all the time but when it does it is consistant with the rpms. done it yesterday evening at idle when i started it , pulled down the driveway and stopped and let it idle and it didn't do it but when i got on the throttle to pull out it done it til i got up to speed. really getting anoying. tried injector cleaner and everything. help
Coolbreeze 10-28-2009, 10:35 AM Knocks are not pecks so think you need to straighten up your nomenclature a little. Pecks for me would sound like the little ticks which folks seem to call typewriter. Real knocking is actually pretty rare in a diesel unless there is a serious problem.
Are you sure it just isn't a little louder due to the cooler weather?
Exhausts leaks, etc are usually the taps that people mistake for valves or far worse things.
blazinmax 10-28-2009, 08:37 PM sorry my literature isn't the same as yours. it's knocking and it's never done it before in the resent winters. been running cleaner in it and it hasn't done it in the past two days. maybe the cleaner is working. but when it does it comes from the top of the motor and sounds the same on both sides.
Coolbreeze 10-29-2009, 10:59 AM Monitor it closely. Nothing is ever broken until it actually is.
I would believe it is a seasonal change from either temperature or even fuel. I'm waiting for the day where they make all diesel 5% Bio.
403Reasons 10-31-2009, 01:06 AM If it's coming more from the passenger side front fender than the driver side, then it's the TSB on the air bubbles in the oil. Duramax's all do it, I heard from my dealer that the oil manages to get bubbles in it and they pop really loud making it sound like loud detonation. Maybe that's what your hearing.
blazinmax 11-01-2009, 06:31 PM yeah i know that noise but this one is almost like a rattle when your pressing the throttle. coming from top of motor equally heard from both sides. the faster the rpms the faster the rattle, knock or pecking which ever it may be is.
blazinmax 11-01-2009, 06:34 PM would take it to the dealer but i'd have to remove my programmer. don't know what to do with the egt probe then. if they look they'll see it.
403Reasons 11-01-2009, 08:14 PM You may have a bad injector then.... As far as the probe goes, I don't think that voids the engine warranty... If anything they may not cover a turbo if they wanted to nit-pick.
blazinmax 11-01-2009, 08:41 PM balance rates seem to be good though. i've been running cleaner in the fuel since it started. think i seen somewhere that you can put a little 2stroke oil in your fuel to help with injectors. wonder if that would help with my problem
403Reasons 11-01-2009, 08:47 PM You could try that. But if it's the actual solenoid in the injector then that wouldn't fix it. I heard ATF works too. I'm assuming that you haven't gotten any codes. Well good luck, worse comes to worse you may need to have the dealer look at that and then just fix it yourself.
blazinmax 11-02-2009, 06:53 PM truck hasn't thrown any codes and runs great still. something is up but i don't guess i'll ever know what til something breaks
Jet Wrench 11-02-2009, 07:46 PM I know the sound. My 06 (56K) does it also. Seems more predominant before engine gets to operating temperature. No issues.

blazinmax 11-02-2009, 08:40 PM it's a very fast rattle or pecking when pressing the throttle. not like a peck every second or so. i really don't know how else to describe it. but its not right. gosh this is really aggervating.
Mines ratteling a bit now. Detonation? Change to winter fuel happening? I'm not running any additives and will try another brand of diesel.
blazinmax 11-04-2009, 07:21 PM is the rattle real fast and sound like its from the top of the motor. equally heard on both sides?
