I was leaving work on 10/26. I started it up, gave it 10 secs, put it in reverse, backed up out of the parking stall, and it turned off/stalled. It turns over, no start. gauge moves to 1/4 tank. 70k on motor. Bought truck 45 days ago. Wife NOT happy with me at the moment. I haven't heard from the dealership yet. Way things are going it won't be under warranty. Any guesses? let's play 20 questions...

Change the fuel filter and reprime. Start there. THere's a very slim chance its a pump, they rarely go out, especially with such low miles.

X2... I'd bet the truck has lost prime, or a bad filter, or both. Cheap insurance - replace the filter and be sure to prime... and be sure the filter seal is in place. Good luck!

Since your a noob you have to remeber 3 things for sure. How to change the fuel filter and prime it. Then keep an extra fuel filter in the truck. Finally keep an extra WIF in the truck!

Hanging on this forum will show you that most no-starts are fuel related.

WIF=Water in Fuel Sensor

You can take it off yourself (at bottom of fuel filter; notice the wires coming from it). Suggest that you buy a WIF tool if you do this your self. Available from, among other places, Kennedy Diesel or Merchant Automotive.

Many guys on here have had the WIF develop a crack which will lose prime as well. WIF sensor is a real poor design but at least an easy fix. Don't feel bad, went through this exact problem two months ago (I had my fuel filter replaced before a real long trip and they forgot to tighten it properly). Dripped fuel all over Colorado and Wyoming before lost prime for good and had to figure it out.

Yup loss of prime mine does it from time to time - pump it up and turn the key. Its a pain but unfortunate you learned the hard way - make sure you read the manual its all in there.

what manuals? where? Is there a tutorial here that teaches how to prime the fuel system? How often can you lose your prime? The truck got a new Fuel Filter, do I have to worry that it will do this again anytime soon?
Thank You
I have another question.... Can you/How do you drain water from the factory fuel filter?

There is a pump on the top of the filter housing. There is also a bleeder screw. Loosen the bleeder and pump the pump until fuel comes out of the bleeder. Tighten the screw and pump until it feels tight. It should start. Probably run rough for a few seconds but will smooth out.

In the truck manual you get with your truck it shows you how to prime your truck if you run out of fuel - its the same thing. I've had issues with the odd fuel filter I installed myself not holding a prime.
I was priming like you say above - but have found you don't need to undo the bleed screw - make a mess anyway - just turn off the truck - pump the prime pump on top of the filter housing a few times (passenger side by the fire wall) - turn the truck back on to prime the fuel pump and it should start.

I know mine must be sucking air from somewhere or it should not happen but its an easy fix and rarely happens - just make sure anyone else who drives your truck knows how to prime the fuel filter.

Just a bit of info. on CCSB's the fuel line from the tank can rub on the LR seat belt mounting bolt and eventually wear a hole in it. It's easily accessed from under the vehicle and I would recommend wrapping in a piece of rubber hose and tying down to ensure it does not rub thru. have replaced a few of these and they price out at @480.00 here in Canada, and that is for the hose alone and it's only @2.5' long!

Just a FYI.

Sorry for the long delay, but it applies to all CCSB with classic body style. I assume would also pertain to new body style also but have never confirmed it. Will chk. this week at work and let you know.

In addition to having a spare fuel filter on hand, it's a good idea to have a spare WIF sensor on hand. Replace the stock nylon bleeder valve screw with a Lubrication Specialist bleeder valve kit (http://lubricationspecialist.com/front/shop.aspx?catid=10&parentid=0&productid=42) if you want to prevent a mess when bleeding the air out of a newly installed filter.

Mine is always the O-ring on the WIF. Those things suck.

the fuel filter design is horrible on these truck, cummins 5.9 is soooo much easier.

A little diligence will prevent most problems as far as the fuel filter and WIF go. I don't think it is a bad design at all.
