In an effort to keep needless miles from wearing out my truck, I decided to build a commuter car. I bought a Mazda RX7 for $600 and put a Kubota 1.5 L diesel in place of the burned out rotary. I've been driving it for the last couple years. The swap isn't pretty but it works and was cheap. The clutch went out at 30 000 miles and is currently being fixed. Other than that, its been a cheap dependable car.
I have some pics posted in my garage.

Thats badass man, heard of a guy doin a similar swap in eastern arkansas in an old toyota. Son of a gun would get 50 or 60 MPG easy too.

That is really quite cool!! I like it. What is the hp rating for it? And what was it in? Looks like it is smaller than the rotory that came out of there, fits good.
The engine is probably from a tractor or some type of construction equipment.

My S300 Bobcat had the same engine.

The engine is a 37 hp 1.5 liter four cylinder. It's used in all kinds of small equipment. The nice thing about it is it usually outlives the equipment that its put in (kind of like a cummins in a dodge) and can be found pretty cheap.
Its a little taller than the rotary, about the same length, and quite a bit lighter. I have a turbo that fits on it, but I'll need to adjust the hood a little for it to fit.

The car has the stock 5 speed in it. So far its holding up alright.
The engine is an 05 series model 1505.
I've seen some attempts to put a smaller engine in some cars. I wouldn't go much smaller than the combo I have. It comes in at about 70 Lbs per HP and doesn't have much wind resistance.
