The brother is in town and I have him take my truck to get an oil change. He goes to Wal-Mart and has them do it for me, which isnt a big deal except that he has them put in 5w40. I live in Las Vegas and right now it's in the 100's. Should I have it changed to 15w40?? I am towing a 38.5 5th full of bikes and camping gear. I dont want the oil to fail me. I do know that the 5w40 if full Synthetic so maybe that will negate the low rating...

Help.

My guess is your ok with the synthetic. It's good oil man. But then again, I don't live in Vegas but it does get way hot here in N. TX. and I run this same stuff year around.

Good luck

I think I would be more concerned with the Fram oil filter.:badidea:

You're fine with 5w-40 synth. oil. the 5 is the cold flow viscosity, "w" is for winter, and 40 is the hot flow viscosity. That 40 means the same thing in 5w-40 as in
15w-40.

Don't worry, the superior cold flow properties of synthetic oil won't hurt anything during warm up and once your engine reaches operating temperature it's the 40 that matters.

Use Mobil 1 5-40W Truck & SUV. Just bought some from Walt Mart for $20. It is real synthetic unlike the Rotella. Do not get me wrong Rotella-T is an excellent oil, except for the smell hihi...

For the hot temps the 5-40W has the same specs as the 15-40W plus you have the added benefit of beign synthetic.

If you change the oil every 5K stick with dino if you do it every 10K or more use synthetic otherwise you are wasting your precious $$$$

You'll be fine until your next oil change.

Nothing wrong with 5w-40 synthetic at all! You should be thankful. I've been running the same for 40,000 miles
