: reverse issue, engine braking, and more!

I have a few issues that I am working on:

A - Reverse feels like it is slipping. It is very weak. I cannot back up in soft dirt at all...it just slips. I also have trouble with any sort of load (trailer, or up a hill). This issues seems to be worse since I changed out the fluid a couple thousand miles ago.

I have read in the archives that a test is to put the shifter in 1st...when I do this it feels normal...and pulls forward just fine.

B - I have no engine breaking at all. I used to have some but it had a hard time grabbing...now there is nothing. As soon as I let off the gas its like I shifted into neutral. This occurs at all speeds and all gears...even from a dead stop.
I have a cabin which I am fixing up...the road up to it has a 10% to 14% grade for 6 miles so this is not good. I have read about a manual over ride but I wonder considering I have zero engine braking I wonder if it will work on my truck.

C - At times the truck gets stuck in 2nd reading the archives it sounds like this is the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) or the associated circut. This only happens once in a while...not really often at all. Any ideas? I think it might be a short?

Here is the info:

1. Fluid level okay while running, warm, level surface.
1a. Fluid color and smell - The fluid and filter have less than 2k.

2. Speedometer reading correctly Yes

3. Shifting normal/hard - feels normal

4. Shifting into OD okay? - yes

5. Any service (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=217763#) engine light: yes - sometimes (its off and on) but I havn't been able to pull a code yet.

6. If SES light on, what codes do you have? - see #5.

7. Model year: 1994 Suburban 6.5 w 4L80

8. Describe symptoms: see above

9. Does the engine come up to full temperature? yes

10. Any service work recently done that may contribute to your issues.
I changed the filter and fluid a few months ago. It didn't seem to make much of a diffrence.

11. Does the TCC lock up (or how many "shifts" do you hear?)
Seems normal sometimes and sometimes it only goes to second (see above)

12. Are you experiencing any kind of slipping?
In reverse only - see above

If anyone has any imput on any of the three issues that would be great.

Thanks
Gene

1. Pressure switch failure is a possibility and one you can check first. It is within your scope of abilities.

2. Direct clutch fault:
worn, damaged clutch plates.

3. Lo roller or sprag clutch fault.

4. Overdrive roller clutch failure.

5. Front band worn or not engaging fully.

Just some of the issues you are looking at.
Did the transmission overheat before?
Did the transmission filter receive correct type filter. I amsking this one because if there was oil starvation then you can go back to the service center with the right questions and demand answers.

I have only had the truck for 40k miles of its 280k life. The PO said it had a newer trans but I am not sure of its history. I am not sure if it ever overheated before I owned it.

I put the filter in myself and it seemed like an exact replacement.

Would the 5 issues you list cause all three things I am experiencing or just the weak reverse problem?

No not all five. It could be one or more to make a combination of problems. I would find a reputable transmission repair shop that carries the ATRA sign. Let him know what you are experiencing.

I talked to a few transmission shops today...they suggested I find a good used trans and drop it in.

I am thinking that might be the way to go. From what I am reading it sounds like reverse has to be mechanical and there is no way to get to it without tearing it apart.

Read previous post. You are experiencing the same issue. It is a low/reverse band problem. If it is a bad band, it will require complete teardown. If it is adjustment problem with apply pin.....not so serious.

Slick250, I read the post and others in regards to lengthening the pin.

That seems like a great place to start.

Thanks

I finally got time to work on the truck this weekend. I legthened the pin by 1/4 inch. It shifted a little hard when up on the stands but once I dropped her down it felt great and reverse felt strong.

Looks like the reverse band is still good.

Thanks for the suggestion. You saved me a lot of time, effort, and money.
