: Limped Trans or clogged fuel filter?

I was towing my fiver (started to type 'pulling my fiver', but that didn't sound good :D) this weekend and had a loss of power - several times:(.

I checked for codes, but found none. Usually went weak when accelerating or climbing a hill. Twice happened on 5->4 downshift. I could drive, but would not go over 2000 RPM. If I was nice it would shift up through gears and drive 55-60 mph. After reprogramming, it would run better - until pushed harder.

I was thinking limped tranny, but after checking this great forum, I'm wondering if it is just a clogged fuel filter. Filter is coming due for changing and I've had dirty fuel from my auxiliary tank. I'll change fuel filter and engine oil because they are due. Hopefully that works. I'd like to upgrade the trans, but don't want to be forced to upgrade.

Usually you would get a code when you limp the trans, when was the last time you changed the fuel filter? I usually go 5-6k miles on a filter.

If you limp the trany you will know it. CEL comes on and your truck will drop down several gears and you wont be able to go over 40ish. You will think it blew up. Sounds like you dont have that issue.

I am not 100% sure on this, but if you limped the trans, I believe you would of had only 3rd gear, and reverse. So, if you were able to go through all gears, it is time for a filter change then. Jerry.

Change fuel filter would be my suggestion too.

Thanks for all the words confirming it is probably just the fuel filter. It looks like I get out of running my daughter to horse riding lessons tonight and get to stay home and change the filter (and oil and wash and wax and,... maybe I should take her;)).
I should know by tomorrow the outcome.

Sounds like engine limp mode, dirty fuel filter. Can't rev over 2000-2200rpm or go over 60-65mph

Yes, it was just a clogged filter. Changed that dirty thing and now the truck runs great.

Glad to hear it was only the fuel filter. Might change the trans spin on too as it can also make the truck do funny things. I change all filters every 10K on my rig.

I changed the engine oil/filter and the trans spin on too. I think tonight is bath night:)
