My 03 was having starting problems for the last month when last Monday it would not start at all. I had it at the dealer twice for the start problem and both times they could not find a problem it started just fine for them. He called and said the start problem was the fuel pump is bad and the injectors were bad also GM is picking up the bill for the injectors but I get the bill for the pump $1600.00 my question is where is the pump located? I think they are doing the injectors just because it’s tore down already and they get the money from GM.I had no symptoms of bad injectors. He said they are replacing all 8

The pump is in the front half of the valley of the engine. Its a pain to get to, since you cant really see it with everything installed. Qualified shops can change them in about 4-5 hours, DIY plan on a full day.

Why are they having to replace the injection pump?

I doubt your pump AND injectors are bad all at the same time, just not likely. I would be very cautious about paying $1600.00 for something you do not need.

My friend had his truck at a GM dealer this past week, they called and told him his injection pump was bad and needed replaced. He had them replace it and when they were done he got a call saying his injectors were bad as well. It turns out his injectors were bad the whole time causing his pump to appear bad. So, he took the pump to our local diesel injection shop and they tested it, came out 100% good. Now the dealer is trying to back peddle and make a "deal" with him. If it was me, I would have them replace the injectors for free and then if the truck needs a cp3 have them replace it or do it yourself. I bet once the injectors are replaced, your pump will magically be good again. ;)

I agree, do the injectors and if the pump is still bad then do the pump. No need fixing something thats NOT broken. The dealer is just trying to make more money from you.

I bet once you tell them to hold off on the pump they will give you a fit over the injectors being replaced under warranty. Just a guess though.

You had high injector return rates I assume. that will cause low fuel pressure in the rail. mimicking pump failure. On start up the injection pump cant pump enough fuel at that low of an rpm when your injectors are dumping it back to the tank.
IMO

I would be asking for my old pump back. Sorry to hear.
