I just filled up today after driving about 20% around town and the rest on the interstate running about 70. My truck just hit 2000 miles and I got 19.26 mpg, hand calculated. I'm excited!

It will get better as it breaks in, when I first got my truck I got 18mpg highway, now my last tank was 21mpg @ 72 mph

I wish my 04.5 got that good... I'm lucky to end up with 17.5 avg after cruising @ 70.

I have 8200mi on my GMC (100% stock:( ).
For the first 3000mi (in winter) I got 18.4mpg, then the last 5000mi I have gotten 23.6mpg (hand calc.). All with about 5% city driving. Average around 60mph on the 2 lane roads I drive around here. Not much interstate driving.

4600 miles on the truck now and I still hand calculate because I can't believe the mileage the computer states. last tank was mostly short trips like 3 miles and a couple of 8 to 10 mile trips, computer said 17.1 and hand calculated 16.86. Very happy! My 01 PSD would get 13 to 14 under same conditions. My Dmax Hwy mileage is always over 20 at any speed. Very happy!

I just hit 21mpg on the hiway today, my buddies 03PSD wishes it could get more than 14, i get around 16.5 in the city.

I am with you Will. I am hoping mine is still breaking in. Only 500 miles so far on the truck. ~14mpg so far. Have 285 revo's. I noticed the others don't mention having the larger tires. BTW, I live near simpson, NC....small world http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/thumb.gif

Boy, there sure is a large spread between what everyone is getting in millage. By this post we see numbers from 12.5 to 21.5 (rounded) I guess I somewhere in the middle at 16.5 average Hwy/Cty. I would sure love to be getting the 21 some of you are reporting, but I am happy with what I am getting compared to my 76 truck. Guess I just need to get my foot out of it, but I llloooovvvveee it soooooo much!!!!!;)

If I keep my (big) foot out of it :( I can milk 20.5 MPG mostly highway. But, I cannot so I stay around 15.5-16.0 MPG. So much fun so little time :ro).

@ 21,000 miles now with no problems

I drove from Memphis, TN to Little Rock, AR today and got 16.4 with the tailgate up, on the return trip I put the tailgate down and got 17.1 according to the DIC. I think when people hand calculate they seem to err in their favor, not nessarily on purpose though. Mine has been as accurate as I could expect. When I fill the tank it usually takes exactly what the DIC says I have used since the last fill up. 3800 miles on truck.

Oh yeah, 70 MPH both ways.

The secret

Freeway
Under 2000 rpm
No wind
A/C off
No city
No hills

With that I get 20.7mpg

I picked up my new truck last week. 05 Chevy ext/sb Duramax/ZF.
Filled it for first time this morning. 18.7 for the first 300 miles.
After driving an 03 6.0 and getting 11-12 I'm very pleased. If it improves
after breakin like everyone says I will probably never own another gasser.

Well I have got 11,000 on my '05. My first tank new it got 16 hwy. It still gets 16 hwy. Oh well! I wish I could get those kind of numbers (20 mpg). Towing 4-5K I get 11-12 -:t . Still love the truck though, just disappointed with the mpg. '02 was much better on fuel.

Freeway
Under 2000 rpm
No wind
A/C off
No city
No hills

With that I get 20.7mpg

add summer fuel and warmer air temperature(my truck likes 60+)

I didn't expect quality of the road surface to make as much of a difference.

I get 20-21 highway empty 12.5-14.5 towing a 5k trailer at around 60 mph, going over 67 mph is not worth the penalty when towing

16 mpg empty in mixed driving but I live in a 2 stop light town

actual congessed city stop in go is horrible especially towing can approach gallon/mile figures at times

PC you hit the nail on the head. a few weeks ago I ran my truck 1000 miles over the weekend across two mountain passes and averageing probably 70-75mph with my 285's on. The three times I filled up I got 15.8mpg 17.8mpg and oddly enough on the last tank after running up stevens pass twice at 80mph then back home I got 18.1mpg go figure...

My LLY is approaching 6 months old, and 12,000 miles. I'm at 17.8 MPG, city/highway combined. The DIC has not been reset since I drove it off the dealer's lot. Oh, it's as stock as the day I bought it.

I'm happy with it!

I usually get 18.5-19.5 hand calcd with stock tires @75psi, driving my 40 mile roundtrip to work. I try to keep it under 70 most of the time and let it coast whenever possible. My DIC is bout 1mpg+ over the hand calcd. I have seen more than a few 16.5 mpg tanks, usually bad traffic weeks or bad fuel quality.

):h ):h ):h ):h ):h ):h MPG's posts can be so amusing! ;)

Here's one for you! I filled my tank at a Truck Stop along the interstate until the nozzle clicked off. The diesel actually spilled out the nozzle onto my truck so apparently it was full. I drove 420 miles at 70 mph on the interstate then filled up again at a regular filling station. It took 30 gallons before the pump clicked off which gave me an average of 14 mpg. Fortunately this pump shut off before spilling diesel all over my truck. :)

I then drove the exact same route back at the same speed and refilled the truck at the same Truck Stop I initially filled the tank at. The nozzle clicked off at 25 gallons, yea once again I had diesel fuel on the side of my truck. But this time I had a 16.8 mpg average. Almost 3mpg better than the first leg.

Any ideas as to why my mpg's were so different driving the exact same route at the same speed? Quad A's should already know the answer to this riddle! :D

DP concensus appears to be that MPG's are best computed "DIC-less", especially if you have changed tires from the OEM size. Ol' JJ posted a high of 23.84 mpg on the ol' DP before figuring out my MPG computation method was flawed. Those that have read the proposed "DP Method for Computing MPG's" thread know where I'm coming from. :)

My most recent "Quad A" DP Calculations" were 18.5 mpg's at 70mph total interstate. Any other Quad A's out there posting mpg's? :ro) JJ :)

I can get upper 17's at best mid to upper 18's if I set the cruise at 65mph ON FLAT LAND WITH NO HEADWIND ON THE OPEN HIGHWAY.

Any faster and the mileage drops.

Anyone claiming that kinda mileage in the city might wanna check their method of calculation, because the truck gets 14-15 in normal city driving and thats just the way it is.

Of course combination city/highway isn't really comparable from person to person, but it will land between those numbers above obviously.

Did anyone actually really buy one of these for commute mileage? Seems to me looks/brand loyalty/personal preference/personal taste overides the mileage diff between our trucks and the F or D brands.

Just my .02 (worth exactly what you paid for it!)

:exactly:

On edit: By the way, any truck with modified programming can forget the DIC, the mileage is computed off a table not by actual injector output, so fuel curve mods defeat the DIC mileage calculations completely. Diff tires also throw any accuracy out the window as well. Credit cards accepted for this extra .02 !!!!! ):h

TXChris, your in Houston, if you ever want to verify my numbers your welcome. I have no reason to lie bout my mileage number. I do fill up after the pump clicks off, but that would not even add to up to a gallon extra.

Funny thing about normal, it alwayd different from person to person, and that is a true statement.

I do tow , and yes mileage is the main reason i bought my truck. It definately beats the 2500HD 6.0l I had.

Nah bro, I wasn't saying you were telling tales at all. With ANY vehicle you can baby it along and get exceptional mileage. Might piss everyone off but it can be done.

The biggest variable isn't even the trucks, its you and me and everyone else. I don't think 19.xx is out of line at all, I just don't think it is readily repeatable without constant care and attention to economy. You can't make that mileage around our area if you are running with the traffic we have and the way most people drive. You know what I mean, even 75 is a rolling roadblock around here.
I actually live in Webster, back behind Baybrook Mall. Your chances of keeping higher mileage are getting better every day as more and more of the katy freeway is completed. That's gonna be a sweet highway once completed!

I haven't tried to maximize and track mileage since the truck was brand new, it's mileage may be better than my memory by now, maybe it was 70mph instead of 65.

Doesn't really matter as long it isn't way off the norm for the vehicle line.

I am on the road a LOT, betcha I have seen you around here and there:eek:

Just curious, what does stopping when the pump clicks matter? The best you can do is fill it to the top till it won't hold anymore fuel. Then on refill fill it all the way again and see what was used versus the miles.

If you don't think one gallon matters, try the math. 19 miles is almost a tenth of a 200 mile trip, and a tenth increase/decrease in MPG is up to 1.9mpg

I have been getting around 20 mpg Highway at 65 to 70 running around 2000 rpm. And yes I use the http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif AAAA methods to fill the tank and crank out the numbers buy hand. Before the AAAA I was seeing 21 to 22 mpg most of the time. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/rockon.gif But you need to look into the tank and see diesel at the top and not foam. I always know about how much fuel I will need and try to slow the flow rate down on the pump to cut down on the foam. But always have to wait about a minute to top off the tank and see diesel at top of the tank. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/grd.gif

Ok, I got one for you all to ponder about millage. I have read a few posts now which indicate that one possible reason the millage is down may be due to the pilot injection. One person even suggested that if you drive at speeds where the pilot injection turns off that you see an increase in millage.

Now here is how my twisted mind works, figuring that every one of us would like better millage, is there any way to adjust the RPM at which the pilot injection turns off to around 2000 RPM as opposed to 2500 to 2700 RPM. (2500 RPM is like 80MPH, I like speed, but the Cops seem to frown on going too fast) I would be happy with a little more noise from the engine to gain some MPG. :D

It would be cool if that change in RPM would only happen in 4th or 5th gear!!;)

Ok, So I am the freak of the site, I know..... But I may just make you think ):h

cbrjohn - interesting, although i doubt if it could be done but check this out... setting the predator on 65 tune makes the engine considerably louder at ALL rpm's i have tried both tunes, 40 and 65 and I think the 65 tune actually gets about a 1/2 mile better overall.

CBRJohn2000, my "Full Quad A" hombre. A freak? Oh heavens no. You are perfectly normal to the rest of us AAAA members. ):h

TxC, you make a good point. Filling the tank until the first click can result in a wide variance of gallons used depending upon the flow rate of the pumps. Truck stop pumps flow at such high rates you can usually squeeze at least 3 more gallons in after the first click(and diesel bath); whereas regular filling stations flow at much slower rates and you may only squeeze in another gallon. We're trying to standardize fill-up procedures for the DP guys that post mpg's so we know we're comparing "apples to apples". It's an anal thing! Hmmmmmmm, you like? ):h

You were out during the "Anal Analysis and Agonizing A-Holes" thread. Although you don't sound like you are the agonizing type. Check er' out. JJ :)

I read the whole thread a couple weeks ago.:ro)

I am sure I qualify, I like research and accuracy.:p:

You are right about the agonizing part, I make the conclusion and then its settled. Reaserch done, testing over, done deal, live with it.

I work a lot and results are what matters to me, not BS:eek:

Being Quad A can be handy at times!:cool2:
