Would like to add this feature to my truck, much like the police/fire engines do when en route to a fire with lights a blazin'. Anyone know how to do this to your vehicle? Thanks

I agree with Bodysurfer....The cops seem to get really pissed about things like this..
I drove an old firetruck to a farm progress days show a few years back..Had the light on the roof yet..So, as I was coming down the side road that the farm the show was on, I flipped the light on..No problem, right??? Uh...wrong...There was a cop there directing traffic where I was pulling in...You would have thought I insulted his mother..chewed my a$$ up and down about the flashing light...you can turn it on in the field, but on public highways...not a good idea.

i was going to do it to try and get people to move over out of the left lane, some people just think its OK to go 5 UNDER the posted speed limit in the far left lane, 18 wheelers included.......thought it would be a good attention getter that folks are behind you wanting to pass......

wjjeeper

That would be called impersonating a police officer...... Not a very good idea, and definately not worth getting caught.

I would NEVER get over if someone did that to me. I am sure I am not the only one. It's those kind of people that make me the maddest. I won't get over for a tailgater or a light flasher -- EVER.

wjjeeper is absolutely correct. Totally illegal. Think about it, if you did that to someone and it startled the driver by surprise and swerve into another lane and cause a wreck, you will be screwed up big time.

I prefer 'Flash to Pass'
On the Autobahn, you flash when closing on lest lane traffic and they move over!

Speeding in Europe is an offence much like here, but the bigger fines are for
Tailgating.
Failure to indicate.
and STRICTLY FORBIDDEN is PASSING ON THE RIGHT SIDE or Lane splitting.

Try that one over there and you better have a high limit on your credit card.

There is always speeding in Finland. IIRC it is based on your speed X your INCOME X a % figure. Those would hurt something fierce i bet!

I'm with Mr. McKinney here. I never get over when somebody tailgates or especially flashes their brights at me. I have a pair of "back-up" lights just for those people. When they tailgate or flash, I flash back twice as bright.

Don't do it, it ain't worth it. Get some big train air horns instead!

look up a company called ten-8 they have the stobe kits can get in a 2-4-6 way set up and add modules. Had this on my old show truck and would use them in the shows parades. Most people will ignor them on the roads, you can do the clear, the reds and blues will get you nailed ne emergency responce colors for civis. I could find the number here but take me a while, have to goto storage and dig it out.

I've git wig-wags on my '93 dually, but I used it for construction. You can bet your a$$ If I was working anywhere close to the road they where on. Too many stupid drivers that need their attention to be taken away from the cell phone. I still want to get some for my '02. Runnin go to awdirect.com they are a tow truck supplier, they have complete strobe set-ups and the have wig-wag setups. Plus a ton of other great stuff.

It is kind of legal here in if you are a firefighter. You're technically not allowed to have them mounted on the vehicle but you can have a flashing light on the dash or roof. Since I am a volunteer firefighter I do have lights. Mine are super bright LED's mounted in the grille. You can barely tell they are there until your turn them on or unless you know where to look. When they are on they are unbelievably bright.

I would never use them except on my way to a fire. It is highly illegal and the fines are in the thousands of dollars here. Not worth it to get someone to move over.

I have concealed strobes on my truck. They are by Whelen. (www.whelen.com)

My specific model: (http://automotive.whelen.com/static/p253.htm)

I have the front ones mounted in the same lense at the DRL and I have the rear ones mounted in the tail-lamp, parking light portion.

I use mine whenever I am parked on the side of the road for job or when I am assisting someone that needs assistance.

From time to time I have come across an accident and been the "first" person on the scene. I always position the truck a safe distance from the accident and turn on my strobes.

I have never been told by an officer that it was unacceptable. Probably because I only use them for "emergency" and safety reasons.

I have used them as a prank on a couple buddies, but that wore off pretty quick after the first time and they knew it was my truck.

I choose not to use them otherwise because I dont wanna get slapped with an "impersonating an officer" deal.

I did get chewed out once, for having the sticker on my license plate that showed my support for my state Sheriff association.

Hopeully, the only reason you wont get over is because you are already doing the speed limit and not purposely trying to slow traffic down and cause a dangerous situation :) (based on your mods list)

Yeah, I'll second that!!! I'm sick and tired of people holding up traffic because they think I'm going fast enough. I'm getting ready for a trip to the cabin (Wisconsin) this weekend and I'm dreading the ride. Nothing like a long drive with a bunch of morons who don't know how to Sunday drive in the slow lane, or use directionals. Please!!! Slower traffic keep to the right and leave the speed limit enforcement to the police.

AndrewFessler
05-26-2005, 08:23 AM
It is a state law in many states too that sloer traffic keep right and that the only time one is to be in the far left lane is to pass slower traffic that is on the right.

I have heard from several people that they got pulled over and given a seat belt violation and a warning for driving in the left lane for no reason.

Also, if you are caught slowing traffic down in the left lane, you can be ticketed for dangerous driving.

No -- don't get me wrong. If it's 70 -- I'll do 80 or a little above. I will also get over. However, if someone does that stuff to me before I get over I won't get over -- EVER.

Why wouldn't you get over if someone flicked their lights once to signal that they're approaching? I could see how you wouldn't move over if they were an asshole about it an kept flicking them, but one or two flicks isn't bad. I would prefer that over someone laying on the horn behind me.

Try here...http://www.galls.com/. If you are in the left lane and refuse to move right you are an idiot, plain and simple. If you want to be a cop then join the force.

It's Fumping nicely... Thanks for the heads up -- I'll get on that...

Also -- I didn't say I refuse to move right. HOWEVER, if someone gives me strobes/flashes/tailgates I will NEVER move over.

yes, we have that "left lane law for passing only" in a few counties around here, and I love it. And if i were a cop and saw someone holding up traffic in the left lane, id cite them for "impeding the flow of traffic" in a heartbeat.

I wish Texas would do like California and restrict big rigs to the far right lanes, i love driving out there.......

Give Texas a little time. I hear they are working on getting the laws changed over to make that happen.

I always get to the right as soon as its reasonable and prudent to do so. Pass to the left and get back. I'll spend a good amount of time passing jagoffs (in the right lane)who won't get out of the way tommorow for sure. I don't drive like a maniac until I just can't take it anymore. I'm satisfied just setting the cruise at 70-72 in a 65. Then I'll end up behind a couple pricks running side-by-side at 60-65 for ten miles at a time. There comes a point in time when you have to ride somebody so as to get their attention. Wanna hit the brakes in front of me??? With 7 inches of lift and 35" tires you better be a big rig to survive that one. I personally like the Alaska law that requires vehicles to yeild to traffic if more than two cars get backed up behind you. SHould be everywhere especially in Wisconsin!!!

its 5 cars behind you and you have to let them go by.

I'll drop the hammer and pass any way necessary if the situation dictates... but usually I'm doing the speed limit, and stay right. If I'm booking in the left lane and I come up on someone, typically I don't even need to do anything because they see my RSOV hauling butt up towards them.

And i wouldnt recommend passing on the shoulder, I did that once after a guy was pacing another guy, and neither would budge, followed for 9 miles, backup was atleast 30 cars and i passed on the right. Ended up one of the passengers in one of the vehicles that was holding up traffic was an off-duty DPS officer and he called it in and had a trooper waiting up the road for me 10 miles ahead........:(

Really easy. Probably took an hour from start to finish. The grille pops out very easily. They are red. They are very hard to miss. They actually hurt your eyes if you look directly at them. You can see me coming for probably a mile. Almost everyone pulls over before I get to them.

Yes the puslate, there is about 10 different modes including one that goes through each different mode one by one.

Land Rover 110 with a 4 cylinder turbodiesel...
crew of 7
typical armament:
Up top,Either a M2HB .50 caliber heavy machine gun, or Mk19 40mm Automatic Grenade Launcher
Front passenger has their own weapon plus a M240B 7.62 medium machine gun
usually has a fire team on it with standard infantry compliment plus antitank mines, AT4's/LAW's, claymores, and other toys to destroy stuff with.

They are very capable in the offroad, full diff lock and all. Had to use a stripped down one to pull my truck out of a mudhole once, noone else could get enough traction. Always in 4x4, but you had the transfer case control for low/high and low/high lock. You could shift from low to high on the move on either side, and from lock to free on the move as well.

I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Not a Land rover 110, but a used RSOV. Just frigging a blast to drive, especially when you're on a live fire range and blowing stuff up.

I have a P-3 locomotive horn mounted under my truck, from an actual train. But I had to remove the spare tire to get the horn and the air tank to fit. If your standing outside of the truck you feel the sound. I am always afraid, as with strobes, that I'm going to blast some guy pulling out in front of me only to have some blue hair three lane over get into a major wreck.
