Finally got to tare one down. There was a lot that impressed me.
The head gaskets are steel!!! I asked the teacher about them and he said thats one of the only engines that have them. The rest are that organic gasket crap. Even the semi motors dont have steel head gaskets. Thats probly one of the reasons for not blowing them.
The piston oil coolers were sweet looking.
They had a hole going in one side and three ports coming out the other side of the piston. Cool design
The bottom end of the motor is very stout.
The teacher is a die hard cummins freak and he thought it was really built tuff.
needless to say he was very impressed.
He told me not to be affraid of throughing 750-800 horse at this engine and it still be very reliable. He told me that i would play hell trying to tare up the bottom end.
The main bearings on the crank were pretty heavy duty and easy to change.
After taking off the heads i wouldnt be affraid of putting injectors or head studs in mine at all.
The injectors were very easy to get out and putt back in.
Over all i was very impressed i give it a :ro)

Cool. I'd like to look at one like that too.
I would imagine though that head removal and injectors take a lot longer when you have to get past all the stuff in the engine compartment. Sure looks that way from eric's pics anyway.

Yeah I agree with you.
This motor already had the intake and turbo off of it so it was a lot easier
we had everything out of the motor but the crank and the cam
The pistons came out real easy

Its a different animal in chassis on a working truck, once its out, then its cake..LOL

Quite a marvel of engineering for sure, lots of neat things. As for the head gaskets blowing, they still do, just not like what you would be used to seeing

sorry about the pics we put it back together in the same night.
as for pistons they are iron with aluminum skirts
the head design is 4 valves per piston or a 16 valve head
as for the cam im not sure we didnt have that out

Hey ecc_33 well thanks for the reply, I didn't know they had iron topped pistons I think ford powerstrokes just run aluminum I could be wrong, I'm unsure about what the cummins has so that makes me feel good about the dmax, now the only thing thats missing is the liners.
