: Aluminum Driveshafts, which trucks after 01 got them?
Crayz 05-25-2005, 11:50 AM I was just looking around under my truck to get some info for new u joints and saw my driveshaft is rusted. What gives? I thought from what I have been reading on here that gm went to an aluminum 1 piece driveshaft on all the dmax's after 01. Maybe I am on crack, but thats what I thought; so I was a little surprised to see mine was all rusty. Is this going to affect what u joints will fit my truck? Thanks!
_nar_ 05-25-2005, 12:02 PM Well my dad's 04 crew cab has an aluminum one, but my extended cab 04 has a steel one.
Crayz 05-25-2005, 12:09 PM ok, I was wondering if if had to do with cab length, because mine is an ext. cab.
02dmax 05-25-2005, 01:19 PM Crayz,
My understanding is only the CC SB trucks got the aluminum driveshaft. The CC LB trucks were too long for a one piece and all the other trucks have steel as well. They should be able to get you the right u-joints for your model/year. As for the specifics on the driveshafts I'm sure someone can correct me where wrong ;-)
Enjoy,
Michael

duramax hd 05-26-2005, 09:13 PM My 01 CC SB came with the steel two piece rusty drive shaft and after 2 or 3 visits to the dealer complaining or "shudder" when taking off, so they replaced it with the one piece aluminum. There is also a TSB out on this.

AkDually61 06-02-2005, 07:58 AM '02 cclb dually..... both front (4x4) and main shafts are steel and rusted.... anyone know p/n's for Aluminum ones ????? probly have to go to a drive line shop to get them built huh ?
Slick 06-02-2005, 08:15 AM Which driveshaft would be sturdier for racing or pulling? I assume steel? Is the only advantage of the aluminum shaft the "shudder" fix?
Heartbeat Hauler 06-02-2005, 03:44 PM Seems to me with the alum driveshaft you have less rotating mass which can be equal to less parasitic HP loss. For the record I have an '01 ext cab 3500 with a 1 piece alum. driveshaft.
