I have a 97 Chev 6.5 3500HD with 200,000mi and what looks like a newer block or maybe a rebuild. From what I can tell most of the fuel system has been replaced. My problem is when the truck temp gets to 160 or so it starts to blow white smoke and dies unless I pump the throttle up to about 2500 RPM. It does this if it idles in the driveway till warm or on the road driving. Please Help!!!:confuzeld

loosen the fill cap on the tank and check for excessive vacuum.
Is the LP working.?
does the truck keep running i you open the T-valve on the water crossover?

I did not notice any vacuum on the fill cap. The pump seems to work fine and the truck did not die when I opened the valve I had it open for about 20sec. and got 1.5L of cloudy fuel. But I only have the problem as soon as it gets to operating temp.

I just opened the t-valve while it was warm, smoking and not running so well and it did not run any worse.

I don't have a reader and I don't think it has a diagnostic mode in the 97's?.

I think that's your problem

If it was the fuel wouldn't it do it all the time?

Over time it could become a problem if deposits faul up the OS.
replace the IP return hose with a clear one,and look for air bubbles in it.
Loosing any coolant perhaps ?
You should get the codes read though. and yes you do have a diagnostic connector under the dash

Thanks, I am looking for a reader I just don't know if you can jump the wires in the diagnostic port to get the service engine light to flash the code. The local dealer wants $85 just to hook it up and I still have to get it there. For now I will drain the fuel and flush lines. I was also thinking of replacing the OPS and I will start checking grounds.

That is good to know, but Auto Zone is about 5 miles away and the farthest I can get the truck is 1-2 miles.
When you put in new fuel I would suggest a new filter and fill the filter housing with ATF, it will help clean the OS. Good luck
