Good looking trailer Uplink. Do you mind if I ask how you made the decision to go w/ a 5th instead of pull-trailer. We're still in the looking stages. Thanks

My opinion is that they handle much better. More care is needed when towing as the overhead clearances are greater in a 5th wheel. Ask for many opinions before you make your decision.

Yuma is awsome in the winter months. I go down there between October and April. The sand dunes are great. Lots of fun on the quads and the temps in the day are about 65-70 in the middle of winter. A lot of people spend time on the Colorado river by Yuma this time of year. It is a lot of fun too exept for the 110 degree temps. So you park your boat by a sand bar, sit in a chair with the water up to your neck and drink lots of beer all day to stay hydrated:ro) . Good times :beerchug: :beerchug:

I towed a Travel Trailer for a couple of years and than found a 5th with with 2 slides and more room so we (the wife and I) bought it. I can tell you that this tow much easier than the travel trailer, is much easier to hook-up. I don't have as much sway as the travel trailer. All and all the 5th wheel we bought is a huge upgrade from the travel trailer of course carried a higher price but I am sure not sorry.

idahofox,

If you don't mind my asking, why did you go with the Alfa?

We are starting to look at upgrading to a 5er and have been leaning toward the Montana line from Keystone.

Based on weights and comments from the Montana Owner's club. Montana has honest king-pin weights and UVW's do to low amount of options.

Dave,

We roamed the internet scoping the different brands. My first focus was the price of various brands after 2, 4, 5 years compared to the New price. Alfa was in the top 3 for retained value.

Then I looked at tank capacity, we dry camp some, fresh = 85 gal, grey = 90 gal, black = 50 gal.

Basement A/C, (not sticking out the top); 8' lid in main living area with 6' 8" lid in bedroom. 399.62 sq ft living space.

Dual 8,000# Dexter axles with G rated tires.

27,000 btu dual air with heat pump.

Insulation: Roof = R20, Floor = R20, Sidewalls = R8. Tinted solar windows, filters UV rays.

Lots and Lots and Lots of storage.

5 year warrenty.

We have the Ideal Model 296, 36' 2": The brochure weights;
Hitch weight - 2140, Total dry - 13,580, GVWR - 17140.

This is the way I axle out, full of fuel, water, propane and stuff:

Steer - 4280
Drives - 5740
Trailer tandems - 12,860

There is more if you want it, just ask.

Hope this helps.

idahofox,

That's a beautiful rig!

Very nice mechanicals. I wish I could pull with a 2500, but it's just a tad past my gonads....

Nudiesel,

I hear the Titanium is also a nice rig but pricey.. How much truth to that legend?

Brook,

Duh! I should have looked at your sig.

Did you add airbags? No matter what I pull, I going to add airbags for 5er use. I'm still going to try to keep under 15,000 trailer weight.

You have to be careful, you never know where the weight police are hanging out. ):h

I think we will add the Alpha to the shopping list. Looking is still free, I think.

Dave,

I understand. ):h

I don't have airbags, I have ran airshocks on Large 4 door sedan cars and was very happy. They make "Air Hitches" for 5th wheels also, pricey; there is a thread on this forum.

Our Alfa is the second largest "Ideal" model for '03. There were five lighter/shorter models to choose from.

Mama (AKA Karen) chose the floorplan. I said to her, "I don't want to tow anything Over 33' ". So she picks the heavyest 36 footer on the lot, right ! We have never bene disappointed. We are thinking "Full Time", so that played in the decision.

We "SnowBird" Oct - Mar each year to SoCA, AZ, NV etc, so it would not be a big step to FT.

The Five Year warrenty is very good; 1st year bumper to bumper no deductable, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th year, $100 deductable, per visit, thats OK !

I don't want a Dually, I have a SRW One Ton now and it is Very stable under load. I don't need more.

I could ramble for ever on my DMax and Alfa, nuff for now.

DavesDmax,

I was looking at a Titanium prior to my purchase of the Kustom Koach Legacy 328. They are very nice trailers! But i was told that the Titanium was a knock off of a Kustom Koach (no offence to anyone) as far as styling goes. Kustom Koach sold the Exterior design to Titanium. Construction on the other hand is totaly diferent. Titanium uses an alumuframe and Kustom Koach uses wood construction. Both have advantages and disadvantages it was so confusing trying to weigh out each that i went with the dealer closest to me. Titanium dealer was 3 hrs away and Kustom Koach was 15min drive. As far as price goes they were close to each other (within a couple thousand dollars) Im not sure what you are comparing the Titanium to to consider it pricey but any trailer that big isnt cheap.

Duratys,

I've been thinking about the comment you made and I realized that the reason that most of these other companies are getting big trailers with low weight is because they are using the same construction materials as what Titanium started doing years ago.

I think that Keystone's whole Montana line was built around the same principles as how Titanium became so popular with 2500 / F250 owners.

I agree! Its awesome how a guy can go out and buy a 33' 5er, load it and the truck, and yank it down the hwy with ease. Compared to a trailer that was built back in the 80s or worse yet one from the 70s:eek: The construction and the materials used in the trailers today allows for huge trailers without the huge trailer weights of yesterday. The part that amazes me is that they are still strong and can last for a long time with some respect and good maintnence. The only thing that has me stumped is the weight dif between the Titanium and the Kustom Koach. IIRC it was only about 800lbs dif between the two:confused: The Titanium beeing alumuframe (walls only) and the Kustom Koach beeing wood. The heavier one was the Titanium. Weird:confused:

They are very nice rigs. Our unit cost us $56,00.00 Canadian back in 2001 for the 2002 Model. At that time I was looking at the New Fleetwood units and they weighed a ton more and they were also more costly. Up here they are very comeptive to the other high end units on the market.
