: Ughh! Dissappointed with stock shocks!
riverchucky 05-23-2005, 04:26 PM 7,900 miles and the stock shocks are worthless! Granted I've driven probably 10% on bumpy/rutted mountainess dirt roads but what a sorry excuse for shocks on these rigs! Seems like GM outta cover these under warrantee or put some real shocks on what they place a 'HD' label on.
Ordering Bilsteins as soon as I close this window!
Goldneye 05-23-2005, 05:35 PM Your making a good choice. I love mine the stock one's are pice's of Censored. Mine we're junk around 13000mi.
4x4man 05-24-2005, 01:52 PM My stockers were crap to. Seems like the HD is only refering to certain parts on these trucks... Front shock sounded like a baby rattle toy. Replaced the stockers with Bilsteins and what a difference, both towing and empty.
saleen_n_around 05-24-2005, 02:00 PM What do the Bilstiens run, part numbers and cheapest place to get them?

Biterman 05-27-2005, 10:22 AM I think the whole front suspension is not up to par.... The shocks just revealed more of this theory as the wore out after 7000 miles! Of course I drive a lot on the famous I-10 between Rancho and San Bernardino CA. After a half hour of ups and downs on that freeway if you stop and grab a shock the temperature is very hot!
I went with dual shocks mainly due to the lift but the ride is much improved also. I have a buddy with Bilstein 5100's and he loves 'em.
h8nopi 05-30-2005, 01:23 PM Looks to me like chevy does this to all their trucks. My last truck a 1500 I changed them out at 6000 (to do a drop) and they were shot. I almost always drive on concrete.
Changed to Bilstiens after 6600mi.
riverchucky 05-30-2005, 03:19 PM Will be installing the Bilsteins this coming Friday. Didn't really realize how bad the stock units were until going over some speed bumps real slow, and the front end kept bouncin' up & down, up & down. Thought I read somewhere on the Forum the stock units were made by Rancho?! -:t
OmyLLwhy 05-30-2005, 04:44 PM After 800 miles of kidney beating this weekend I also have to do something soon. Will be taking my 80 year old Uncle from Walla Walla across Montana in July and I don't want to beat him to death. I'm leaning towards the rancho automatic adjustables (RSX I think) unless i hear bad reviews. Any comments are welcome. I don't want something I have to manually adjust and only tow about 5000 #'s.
riverchucky 06-01-2005, 06:15 PM Couldn't wait. Got home early this afternoon and installed the Bilsteins. In a different thread, Briano is absolutely correct regarding the Bilsteins! They're awesome! The rig feels like a sports truck and doesn't keep oscillating up & down anymore over bumps. :D
Will also be taking a trip to the Idaho/Montana Bitteroot area in a couple weeks and likewise, didn't want to give my wife and I a kidney beating.
The stock shocks still had some dampening action but absolutely no rebound action - no wonder the ride was so bad!
BMorrison 06-08-2005, 11:02 AM The front shock sounded like a (baby rattle toy) I wonder if thats what I'm hearing when applying brake and coming to a stop from 20 mph and lower? Please send some info help here.Thankx
riverchucky 06-08-2005, 11:36 AM Probably not the shocks. Just started hearing a similar 'klunk' noise myself just recently when applying brakes and going over bumps at low speed.
AndrewFessler 06-08-2005, 12:58 PM I bought a set of Bilsteins from Kennedy on Tuesday. He shipped them same day and UPS shows them to be delivered tomorrow.
I have 37k on my stock shocks. I have noticed the ride has lost its caddy feeling from when I bought the truck 30k miles ago.
This will weekend, or sooner, I'll be putting the new ones on!
1BADDMAX 06-08-2005, 03:28 PM I installed a set last Friday @ 107k. What was I thinking!? All of the vibration and harshness have been resolved.
riverchucky 06-08-2005, 04:17 PM You're gonna love it with the Bilsteins! They're supposed to be lifetime shocks - hopefully they'll maintain the rideability for as long as I have the truck. Like I mentioned, my stock units were shot within 7,900 miles.
Chris Todd 06-11-2005, 10:07 AM Somehow I made it 69,000 on my stock shocks, then changed to Bilsteins. I was having some significant understeer problems and when I got the stock shocks off, I found out why. The stock shocks were JUNK. One was absolutely useless, it would just move slowly in and out and stay where we put it; dead weight.
New shocks made quite a difference.
Get the stock junk off as quick as possible (some guys are having problems as quick as a couple thousand miles) and get a high quality set of replacements. I like the Bilsteins. Kennedy sent them in just a couple days. But regardless of the brand you go with, get a great quality shock and enjoy the ride.
You will not regret it.
idahofox 06-11-2005, 11:18 AM Bilstein's are Great Shocks, and I understand "Lifetime", but be willing to purchase new when their "Lifetime" is over.
I have in the past, install new shocks when I replace tires. Having never worn-out a set of Bilstein's, I'm not sure that is still applicable.
For what it's worth.
