Wife & I went up to Flagstaff on Friday afternoon to get the devil outa here! After everything was loaded up with water and 3 horses, we had time to stop at disposal site and weigh the trailer 14,890#. 108 degrees ambient temp and 6200' climb to Flagstaff. Set the cruise at the speed limit (slower than I usually do it, <grin>) and headed up the mountain. On one of the up-pitches the EGTs climbed to 1400+ and the engine temp got to 235 (Juice at Level 2, tow haul, and O/D Lockout engaged), and transmission temp at 210 and the ambient temp was 98 degrees speed at 60-65mph. At top of that grade things leveled out (maybe 1% grade) and everything cooled off in less than half a mile. Normal EGTs were in the 900 range. Engine temp normal at <210 and tranny about 180-190. Arrived in Flagstaff at 88 degrees and topped off the tank - - - 8.5mpg! Man I love this truck. BTW I had the AC running the whole time. The last time I made this same trip with the same load with my old 454 Cheby, I had the engine temp at almost redline the whole way, nowhere near the speed limit (at times down to 30-35 mph in 3rd gear), the floorboard so hot my wife couldn't put her feet on the floor, and got to Flagstaff and topped off the tank - - - 3.5 mpg! Don't miss that gas pig at all!!

Shredded 1 of the E rated tires on the trailer (did not blow) and separated the sidewall of another (Carlisle Brand). Both of the D rated tires (came on the trailer when I bought it a few years ago) are still holding up well. Had to buy 2 new E rated tires in Flagstaff. Damn!

BTW, it was great up in the horse camp. Riding in the pines enjoying the cool, and no phone.

Oh ya, if you haven't discovered "Books on Tapes or CD" I highly recommend them. Great way to enjoy any trip.

Books on CD will be everywhere soon. Gotta ask most places, but they are the best. It'll take at least 3-4 books to get me to and from Idaho to go elk hunting this fall!!

Hi Mitchagain,

It has been nice up here (Flagstaff). 80 as opposed to 110 degrees. Got hot quick this year down there. That is always a pretty good tug up the hill from 2000 feet up to 7000 feet elevation.

I have been huntin in Idaho in areas 66, 66a, 76, and 28 for several years. This year I bought General season tags and think we'll hunt the latter part of November in 66. Probably stay at the Bear Creek campground. Really like the Caribou City area, but the Draw can be kinda iffy. My son won't be home from Iraq until the first of November, so the general hunt in the Tex Creek/Palisaides area should work for us. Really wanted to hunt 28 this year in the Panter Creek area, but didn't get a B tag. There is always next year. BTW, my son & I have lifetime hunting licenses, best investment I ever made!

Ya it is nice up there, We usually stay at the Little Elder Springs CG and ride in the cool timber with the horses. We monitored the temp there this past weekend and it was in the high 50s at daylight and 88 by 4pm. Still, its a helluva lot cooler than Gilbert!! 108 at 5:30 pm last 3 days when I pulled into the driveway..... ugh!
