I know I came across this forum before but I just can't seem to find it again. This is more for curiousity purposes then anything. What are the differences between 6.2 and 6.5? And are there 6.5's that come without a Turbo or is the 6.2 the 6.5 without the turbo? Someone was telling us that the 6.2 are set up to be able to handle a turbo at stock is this true.
I also was looking at my RPO codes and my truck came with a Heavy Duty Transmission cooler. Are these any good or have you noticed that you to do upgrades to these. I am not having any problems with it but I was just curious about it.

6.5-6.2=.3........so I guess the difference is .3 :D
That's my way of saying......can someone much wiser than me please answer the lady, because as you can see .3 is the best answer I can come up with on my own.

plus the heads are not the same on the 6.5 and the 6.2. Most 6.2's came without a Turbo, I believe GM offered the 6.2 with factory Banks Turbo in some years. Some folks added the Banks Turbo system on their own also. The 6.5 come in pickup's, Suburbans, Blazer/Tahoe came with Turbo, now GM offered the 6.5 in commercial aplications without Turbo's, I think they called the Economizer. All 6.2 and '92 & '93 6.5's have mechanical IP's and "94 on have electronic pumps. (mostly) That's about what I know, or think I know.:confuzeld

Old 6.2L blocks has a two piece main seal, but the later 599 cast had a one piece. I think a 6.5L bore is .080" over a 6.2L, stroke is the same.

Piston construction is major difference. The 6.5 piston crown is much thicker to withstand turbo charging better. 6.2's weak link when turboing is the piston-they crack if pushed hard.

From my dealership days, I never saw a 6.2 that had a factory turbo. Don't think they ever made one. Banks and BAE were the brands we installed at the dealership. Fortunately we didn't do many of them. They usually came back with problems. Pistons, head gaskets, overheating, etc. Some guys were using them as a passenger car and got along fine, but if you pulled loads or ran it hard, look out!
