: Power Steering Oil Cooler?
CanadianRigger 05-23-2005, 10:43 AM My 95 has a power steering oil cooler in front of the rad on the drivers corner. My 00 has no cooler? but the lines that would have run to the cooler come out the front as if they were going to go to one then they snake back and go into the frame rail and snake a 'S' shape inside the rail, is that GM's newer idea of a cooler? Reason i ask is those seem to be the only lines that i'd have to move in order to get my rad a litte closer to the engine for the purpose of squeezing an intercooler in there. Is anyone elses like this?
Texas Diesel Guy 05-23-2005, 11:21 AM Thats the tranny cooler your talking about right?
Never heard of a powersteering cooler.
chevydiesel 05-23-2005, 11:33 AM Just to give credit to CR, there is a power steering cooler. My K2500 has one, its just where described above.
Texas Diesel Guy 05-23-2005, 11:39 AM Thats the same location as my Tranny cooler on my '94.
chevydiesel 05-23-2005, 11:57 AM Possibly part of the towing package but here is the usual order.
Passengers' side has the auxillary Transmission cooler, Then closer to the Drivers side is the oil cooler, then beside the oil cooler on the Drivers side will be the power steering cooler. It's a small cooler about 3" wide by about 10" long.
CanadianRigger 05-23-2005, 11:58 AM There is a steering cooler on the 95, located if your standing in front of the truck in the upper right corner, hard to see but its there, 1 or 2" wide by 10-12" long. Blazer may not have it.
Just wondering if anyone else's has the same config as my 00, very weird indeed.
nvmtnlion 05-23-2005, 05:51 PM Yup, just checked my 1994. Power steering cooler right where CR says it is.
CanadianRigger 05-23-2005, 06:31 PM Anyone have the newer truck with just the lines routed into the frame rail??
marktara 05-23-2005, 07:55 PM My 98 has the PS cooler running into the frame too
quantum mechanic 05-23-2005, 08:02 PM My '93,'94 and Dad's '96 have what you discribed as a power steering cooler on your '95 on the drivers side.
cjk65 05-23-2005, 09:55 PM I have the power steering cooler lines inside the frame as your 00 CR
CanadianRigger 05-24-2005, 12:25 AM Hmmm... That just seems plain weird to me, is that their purpose being there, to stay cool? Those lines could only be a few inches long to suit there purpose if they don't need cooling. I'd like to move mine outta there so i can get the rad moved forward for an IC in the future.
Short of that Kennedy's is looking pretty good.
Carey Weber 05-24-2005, 09:04 AM CR,
Is your 2000 a light duty 2500? Does it have 6 or 8 lug wheels?
I'm wondering if its based on GVW the light duty 2500's were 7200 GVW and the the heavy duty 2500's were 8600 GVW.
My 97 K3500 SRW has the cooler just behind the grill.

CanadianRigger 05-24-2005, 10:26 AM Mines the HD, 8 lugs, flares, 8600 GVW
There's such a cooler even on mine. GVWR is 6450, has some towing stuff on it from factory.
I wonder why one would need to cool the PS fluid!? Can it have something to do with the brakes powered by the PS pump?
CR, have you thought of that? Maybe it's better not to touch those lines ...
CanadianRigger 05-24-2005, 04:09 PM I'm sure its just for cooling the PS pump down, The lines should get a good breeze being inside the frame rail like it is, if i move mine for whatever reason i'll probably put on the finned style cooler as per my 95 setup.
Joey D 05-24-2005, 06:22 PM My 96 3500 gas motor truck had the cooler and my 98 just has the lines in the rail as described above.

Well, why should the PS pump need cooling? If the cooler is mostly to be found on trucks with one or the other towing option, it seems likely that it has something to do with the brakes because steering doesn't get harder when towing, but braking does. If that is true, you're (indirectly) touching the brakes (to unknown effects) once you touch these lines.
My power sterring cooler is on the drivers side of the radiator on my Tahoe.

I said PS pump, also would be the hydraulics for the brakes yes, i highly doubt it will effect the brakes, like i said, i would likely put the same cooler on it as is on the 95 if i moved them, it wouldn't be the first time design on these things has been improved over stock set-up.
jac6695 05-24-2005, 11:30 PM CR, my 97 has the finned cooler on the drivers side.
BTW, if you want one, send me a PM. I have one in the garage not doing much cooling on the shelf. Cash for shipping and it is yours.
CanadianRigger 05-25-2005, 10:25 AM Do you have the lines that go with it as mine won't work.
jac6695 05-25-2005, 11:03 AM The cooler came off of a 98 gas engine truck. The lines appear to be the exact same as my 97 Diesel, but I can't confirm the the connection to the pump as being the same. GM has been consistent with power steering fittings for a while now. The fluid through the cooler is on the return side, and could actually use good quality hose clamps if needed, or compression couplings on the lines (if nothing else a temporary move until permanent lines could be fitted). Let me know.
