I could not find an answer on here after a search...

When changing the external spin on filter, how much fluid should be replaced?
I refill the new filter before i put it on and then add about 1/4 to 1/3 of a quart through the dipstick after that. Has anyone measured the approx amount of fluid to be added? I am afraid i might be adding too much, and after 4 or so changes, i will have too much fluid in the tranny and it might overheat or leak out.

What do you guys do/how much do you add?

The filter holds 1 pint. That isn't enough to refill the trans with any fluid usually, depending on where you run your fluid level at. Eventually you will have the fluid too high.

Search the "maintenance and fluids" forum. This topic, and about every other, are beat to death over there ...

The corerct answer is 1 pint. Most of us don't even bother with it for such a small amount. Overfilling the Allison is a sure way to overheat it. 1 pint is not a mojor concern, but consequtive pints over time will be.

Why not just refill the filter while you have it in your hand, before installing fresh filter.
My bet is it doesn't hold much more then 8 oz's

:exactly:I add a little to make what is lost, as previously quoted, 6 to 8 ozs. Don't forget the magnet, and, if you change the filter when the truck is cold, it will be very easy. Try it...

Some people don't prefill filters because they could be introducing a contaminate that won't get filtered by pre filling the filter.
