: Should I go with the LMM or LBZ?
Rugged Racing 09-27-2009, 11:41 PM Im looking to get another diesel and i'm not sure which motor to go with. 2 of my buddies have LBZ's and get around 15 mpg towing big trailers. I have heard a lot of bad stories about bad mpg on the new LMM. Any opions on which motor I shoud go with???????
carter_44 09-28-2009, 12:00 AM i would recommend the lbz. going to be cheaper and it is a great truck. the lmm gets rough mileage, especially towing, if you dont get the dpf off of it. if your going to keep it stock the lbz is the way to go. if you dont mind putting some money in the lmm to fix the dpf problem then they can get good mileage as well.
2004dmax 09-28-2009, 12:19 AM a lbz has more power and a bit better economy, easier to mod if you want to
Wa_rWagon 09-28-2009, 01:06 AM Is it going to break your back to loose some MPG? I mean does your business die over 1 MPG? Then there is the reduced oil life and lack of Biodiesel compatibility on the LMM. Well the 5% you can run stock just ends up in the oil from DPF regen...
The only difference being a DPF... It is well documented what engine is better. Next time you fuel up pour a gallon of diesel on the ground and think of the DPF equipped LMM owner.

true, the mileage is not going to break you but it is certainly not a difference of 1mpg. mileage between a stock lbz and lmm is drastic especially towing. towing heavy the lbz can still pull 14-15 and the lmm is down around 10 somewhere. pull the dpf crap off and they are comparable.
bartman 09-28-2009, 11:22 AM I totally disagree with you as I have owned both and can tell you that pulling my Raptor Toyhauler with both, that the LBZ did not get "a lot better" MPG's, infact they are almost identical. My LBZ would get about 9.5-10 and my new LMM gets about 9.0-9.5. I dont drive any different either. Now, I will say that the LBZ seemed to have a little more grunt, but that may be due to the fact that it had more miles on it and my LMM is still a virgin at 4000 miles. I think with time it will get better. I really like the way new trucks look inside and out too!

cool...glad to hear that you like the new truck. what kind of weight are you hauling and what kind of setup? that is the first i have heard of an lbz getting that rough of mileage towing unless it is something really heavy.
hdd-max 09-28-2009, 03:56 PM My lbz's would get about 10 towing around 22k combined weight. My LMM's are exactly the same with the DPF's removed, egr blocked and 4" exhaust

40 Foot Raptor Toyhauler that weighs about 16k loaded. It never got what others are "claiming" they get pulling a similar load. I have a friend that has an LBZ 2500HD crew pulling a 10k toyhauler travel trailer that only gets 9 MPG. He was a GM Service rep and could not figure how I was getting the same mileage pulling a much bigger and heavier trailer. Baffled both of us! He never drove much over 70 when towing either. Every truck is different.
nickracer9 09-28-2009, 07:32 PM My lbz and lmm are about the same. The lmm gets about 1mpg better then my lbz, only difference being lmm(265 tire) and lbz(245tire). As far as power the lmm wins hands down. Much better response and consistant power. Towing my 21ft enclosed snowmobile trailer(5K pounds) from seattle to portland both got about 9.5-10mpg with the edge going to lmm. Both towing a 32ft weekend warrior toy hauler at 14-15k got 9mpg! I'd go LMM!
Max Power 09-28-2009, 07:40 PM As far as I am concerened the decision should be based more upon which body style. My LMM with 15,000 miles get 18-20 on the highway and 10-12mpg pulling my 15,000lbs 36' 5er. It is the same mileage as my EFI tuned LLY was getting and the LMM is bone stock.
Paul Clancy 09-29-2009, 07:43 AM LMM is a great powerful and quiet truck with far fewer dpf issues than dodge and ford of the same year. If you can find a clean, low mile, no rust lbz that is a good choice as well.....but don't go lbz because it's better in mileage or power - get it because it's cheaper and you like the obs. I too find my lmm to get similar mileage to my 02 with the same load so I think the mileage claims (high and low) are for certain trucks. I looked for a clean lbz and couldn't find one near me. Even drove long distance to see some that looked good on the web and they were rough in person. Convinced me to go new. Glad I did.
merfost 09-29-2009, 05:00 PM I would choose the lbz. I have a 2007.5 lmm and mine has high egt, engine heat and it regens often pulling my 12,000-13,000 lbs 5th wheel. Can't say about millage as mine is in the 9-9.5 range pulling. Emty is about 18 mpg(not bad) I have a lmm for sale.
DENT GUY 09-30-2009, 01:26 PM I had a 05 LLY with Edge, Banks cold air and exhost. It would get about 17 at 70 not toeing and would level out at 10 when pulling my 35ft toyhaler. My new 08 LMM stock dose the same. But i can race my old truck and it blows my doors off.

LMM is down around 10??? Not on my truck! I consistantly get 18.5 - 19.5 mpg empty. Pulling my 33 foot camp trailer, which weighs in @ 10K - 12K, I've never seen anything below 15.5 mpg. These numbers are all hand calculated. I always pull in Tow/Haul mode cruising at 60 - 70 mph and manually shift to 5th gear on the hills. Truck has a little over 16K miles on it now and 95% of those miles are highway. Very satisfied with my "stock" LMM!!

My stock LMM pulls my 36' 5er like a champ. Nice daily driver too. I did a lot of research and shopping before deciding on the LMM.
Would you mind telling me exactly how to manually downshift? Pm if necessary.
transferred 10-01-2009, 01:50 PM LMM- better looking exterior and interior imo and having pulled with my friends 2500, pulls like a champ and a little stronger than my older D'max

Just pull the shift lever down out of drive(D) and put it in the manual(M) position. There is a +/- button on the shift lever to put it in any gear you want. This feature also works great when going down a steep grade in tow/haul mode. I usually shift into 3RD gear and it keeps my speed at about 35 mph. Rarely have to use the brakes when doing this, which in turn will extend the life of the brakes on the truck. The Allison tranny matched with the LMM is sure an awesome combination. Anyways, give this stuff a try and let me know what you think. Send me private message if you like. Enjoy your truck!!
Sacket 10-06-2009, 07:06 AM I like my LMM over my LBZ as far as comfort, plus I like the look of the new body style over the LBZ. On my LMM I was getting 13/14 mpg new. It appears someone stole my DPF and I was mad as hell at first, however I didn't want to make a claim on insurance (10% increase on premium) and left it off and my mileage went to 18. Maybe you will get lucky and someone will steal your DPF if you go with the LMM.
Good luck.
Coolbreeze 10-06-2009, 09:22 AM I would always take the "Z". Over the longhaul DPF or not the LMM costs more to own and service. Loose the DPF and it costs you, keep it and it costs you!
