What is the ring and pinion ratio on a CUCV?

depends, pickup or blazer?

Pickup is 4:56
Blazer is the crappy 3:08

mangus, the military blazers had the 10 bolts in them right? did they have any kind of locking differental?

real question is: why does my gm shop manual say for the 8.5" 10 bolt axle: "no attempt should be made to convert this axle to positraction"

anyone know for sure, or have any ideas?

I didnt realize the military blazers had such a crappy gear ratio either.

New to diesels but not axles. The 10 bolt is considered to weak with its 27 spline axles to use a locker. We have however used powertrax lockers in several K5's with no problem, as long as the tires stay around 33" max, and you dont use to much pedal when a wheel gets bound up. The 10 bolt is a pretty good axle, but it has c -clips, and small shafts. Yours probably has a gov-lock -:t in it and it prob. will not engage (worn clutch pack). For the price of rebuilding the 10 bolt you could get a 14 bolt new in the crate (+/- $500) with a detroit and good gears :ro) . The front axle would have to be re-geared , and you will have to carry two spares unless you convert the front hubs to eight lugs. You need more gears anyway...... I have owned sevral K5's and 3.08's suck off road with larger tires.

My CUCV pick up was reengined with a 5.7 gas (before I bought it). What size tire would be good to run with the 4.56's to get the rpms down a bit?

RPM=MPHxGRx336/tire diamiter. so....

2400rpm= 60mphx4.56x336
------------
40 <-inches tall(from pavement to top of tire)

2400 is nice for everything, bad for gas mileage. nothing is good for gas mileage in your scenario though. if your mostly street, you can run a larger tire for your hearts content, but in all actuality, your gonna burn gas anyway. hopefully the equation I gave you will help you decide what to do. if this is an efi motor, your only gonna have to research what to do. if its carb'd, I'd look to edelbrocks preformer package (carb intake and cam) to help. it likes low gears and will help on the highway and also off the line. as with anything, help it breathe and help it spark, it will make you happy in many more ways than one. good luck.

My Gov-Lock works great, feels just like my D-locker in my 14 bolt...

My question has been, I have a set of 4:10 axles in my pickup 8-lug 10bolt front, and 14 bolt full floater rear with a detroit locker. I intend to primarily use my blazer on the street, and for snowplowing. I have a Turbo 400 behind the 6.2. I have access to a 700R4 to rebuild as well.

Honestly, is any of the swapping really worth it? I know the ideal combo is the 4.10 gears, and the 700R4.... but that involves the axle swap (front axle rebuild) and a tranny rebuild...

I could just drive it, and have a doggy 6.2... :-D
