My friend just got a new 2004 CC/SB Cummins and he was wondering what the best upgrade/performance option would be? and the safest? He is just wanting it for better mileage. What do you suggest?

Thanks

Ben

The first thing I would do is mod the intake or replace it entirely with an AFE. Next would be a free flowing muffler like a Donaldson or Nelson. I have a 31" Donaldson and it sounds very good. Those mods won't help much with mpg but will allow for use of a good chip which will help fuel economy. Beware that a chip can easily void warranty so be careful. Gauges should also be installed.

On my 2004.5 I had the computer re-flashed per a DC bulletin for "poor fuel economy" which will add 1-2 mpg per the bulletin and it did on mine. After I also added an Air Aid intake and modular intake tube to help things breathe a little easier. (The AFE is a little better filter from what I have heard and allows more air flow for engine modifications if you plan to make them). Other than that a mild re-programmer is about all that will help, but watch out for warranty issues if that is a concern.
