My first Vacation in 3 years, plan on towing my 5th wheel, and bam lots of white smoke at idle yesterday. Noticed the exhaust was smelling stronger like diesel the last couple of weeks, and now the white smoke. It goes to the dealer tomorrow, if its injectors I am afraid it will take longer then a week to get the truck back. So much for my vacation

Getting a little P,O'ed about this, 62,000 miles should be nothing for a Diesel, wondering if we are sacrificing trouble free durability for a street rocket. Keeping my fingers crossed. Are the replacement injectors any different then what came with the truck? I have heard different answers, sure hope they are.

Wow...sorry to hear about the bad news! But please keep us posted on what you find out! I have an '03 with 38K on it, so I am really curious!

Going in today, I hope its something simple, but these symptoms zero in on the injectors. I hope to hear if it is the injectors, that the replacement ones are "new and improved" or ?????. I have a Nicktane filter, and put in Standyne, so this truck has been babied.

My stupid '01 made us put off one trip and I drove my old reliable '84 for another one a few months later becaues the '01 was in the shop. I am not sold on the Duramax, thinking about selling it in about a year.

I'd like to stay positive, this truck has alot of things going for it, but the thought of having to pay for injectors out of warranty in the future, scares the bejesus out of me.

First time I actually thought about selling it, and found myself looking at other brands, and also older diesels, without the Rocket science stuff to go bad. Still all and all, I have a ton of add-ons ($$$) and would take a bath right now if I let it go, hopefully I won't have to.

If my injectors ever go after warranty it will be perfect excuse for bigger ones.
I know thats only good for performance.

Don't the injectors get warranties for a set amount of time from when they get installed?

Just heard from the dealership, 8 new injectors. On the 03 and up, unlike the 01 and 02's which get them automatically, GM wants the mechanics to replace only the ones effected, and only replace all 8 if the bad injectors showed a complete breakdown.

I anticipated this, and made sure the Mechanic knew, I tow a 5th wheel, I have a 7 month old, I do not want to have my family stuck on the side of the road. So he took care of me. They are even going to have it done in 3 days, so looks like I will get a vacation afterall.

Long term, I don't know, the injectors have a 100,000 warranty on them, don't know if they are any different then what was replaced,(A question I have for him). I ran a Nicktane filter since 8,000 miles, used additives, towed very seldom and not very far.

I am not happy I only got 62,000 before they self-destruct, so the jury is still out if I stay with GM for my long term Diesel needs, I just ordered an Envoy for my Wife, so I try and buy American when I can and GM offers alot of incentives, but they aren't worth a darn if your injectors take a dump.

So what if you have to replace the injectors. You cannot trade a vehicle because of maintence issues. Financially it is the wrong thing to do. A vehicle loses 60% of it's value during its first four years. This means that your new 40k duramax has a trade in value of 16k after 4 years. That is a difference of 24k. If you keep the truck for longer, that means that you have only spent 3k on injectors and you will be ahead after the 4 years. Keep it longer, and you will be even further ahead. The hit you will take on depreciation, taxes, and ridiculous dealership prices far exceeds any maintance issues you have. Don't think about the parts that you have to replace. Think about all of the parts that you don't have to replace. Your vehicle is the largest investment that you have that goes down in value. Keep it forever, and you win the vehicle game. My '01 is in the shop every couple of months having something fixed or replaced. Who cares? It's paid for. $300 here and there is better than an additional 20-30k for a new one. Think long term, instead of now. Broke people ask "how much are the payments." Financially stable people ask "How much do I owe".

Better to have shown up before the trip than half way there!

Hope all is well now. The earlier LB7s were being warrantied for 200k on the second set of injectors. I would ask the dealer if your '03 is covered like this as well.
