: Check your hitch regularly!!!

The last time I towed my 23' wakeboard boat I noticed the ball mount looked like it was sagging. I thought it was strange since I have air bags over the rear axle of my truck. I decided to upgrade my hitch and I'm so glad I did. When I removed the factory hitch I saw it was about to let go. See the pics below. I have never towed anything over 7,000 pounds. Anyone in San Jose, CA need a paper weight?

Damn!!! What have you done to that thing. Now you have me nervous, i have seen pics of other GM hitches that were abused but the tongue weight of your boat shouldnt do that. I have yanked stumps out of the ground, i have had at least 3k of tongue weight at times and my tri-ball hitch sticks out at least 6-8" further than normal so it gets more leverage than it should. So far i have had no problems but i will be checking them both in the morning.

Wow !!!! mine was rusty as heck but didnt do that.....it was junk tho. What was GM thinking (dont tell me I know) when they decided to put that junk on thier trucks.

I changed mine as soon as i bought the truck....went with class V Curt Magnum....Niiice hitch. I cut the mounting tab off from the old hitch for the lights....welded it back to the bottom of the bumper.

Glad you caught that one.

I really don't tow anything over what the truck is rated for. I have a 24' enclosed car trailer that I haul 2 Yamaha Rhinos, 1 quad, and some camping gear. I have a weight distributing setup with anti-sway even though the total weight is around 7500 lbs. I tow my 23' wakeboard boat or a small 5'x10' landscape trailer with my Rhino. I have pulled my friend's 21' toyhauler with weight distributing bars.

I guess it could have been worse like if the truck frame tore rather than just the hitch.

I think the problem is with the weight distirbution bars. I think that it places too much torsional load on the POS hitch.

Thats what it looked like didnt it.

I towed my 31 TT twice with WD Hitch......and mine(stock receiver) was rusty as heck. I count myself even more lucky now having seen those pictures. The Curt Mag is the cats meow even if you dont tow alot.

ps looks like some of that crack on yours had been there awhile and some was fresh.

The stock hitches are junk. When I had the 5th wheel hitch installed the shop that it had a pile of GM Hitches. I asked them why they keep them around and he said they are some litigation cases involving most of them with GM. He told me if I started using it regularly to replace it, he would do it, or I could order one online and do it myself, but he said he wouldn't tow with one. According to him the welds are either weak and/or rust due to poor workmanship and the received should have been welded 100% around and not just the top and 1" on the sides.

Scary thing is that the safety chains connect to that also.

It does look like WD hitch problems but the pics are from the back side of the hitch. The WD actually "twists the opposite direction:confuzeld
