My 01HD came with a brake controller already installed by the previous owner. I am not sure wheather it is working or not. Is there a way to test to make sure that it is working properly without hookin up a trailer? I can't remember off the top of my head as to which brand it is, but I believe it is a Tekonsha Voyager, but am not 100% positive. I will check in the morning.
Thanks
William

I have the same one. You need to hook a trailer up to get it to work has far as I know. The light doesnt come on until u hook up.

Ah I see. I never have seen the light on. As with other that I have seen when you hit the brake the light will come on, with or with out the trailer attatched.

I've got a similar controller. A green light will come on when it is connected to the trailer. This lets you know it's "Recognizing" the trailer is there and that you have a good connection. The green light then tunrs orange/red when you push on the brakes.

If you back the truck up to the trailer, and plug it in, you can put on the brakes and have someone listen for the brakes to activate on the trailer.

Ok thanks. Are there any problems or anything like that with these controllers or are they a good unit?

I have the same unit and I tow a 38 foot toyhauler. It works great on all four wheels. You will have to hook it up to the trailer and drive somewhere flat. Set the level adjustment using the left hand dial just until the light turns from green to orange. Then using the right hand dial set the break force until it just locks up the tires going 35 MPH. I then back it off a tad. You will then want to tow the trailer setting the unit so the trailer breaks come on before your truck brakes. Takes a little playing with. You can also set the aggressiveness by turning the level dial (left hand side) counter clock wise to get the brakes to apply earlier or clockwise to have them come on later. I ussually change this depending on the terrain. Driving in mountains or heavy traffic I like them a little more aggressive and when on the flats less aggressive...Jim

Well, I was wrong with the model. It is an Envoy. Anyone have one of these or any info about them?

You can test it by using a 12 volt test light.Ground the one end of the test light and touch then pin on the 7 way with the other...It is a little tricky to do it with one person. With the test light hooked up then you can activate the controller.

or find somewhere sandy or gravel like crank the knob until the trailer drags then back off as needed.

I have used an old style front head lamp (monofilament) to test the brakes. Plug it into the right connection of your trailer plug and watch the lamp. It won't light up like a front headlight would but it will get brighter and dimmer as you push the brakes. I have two long wires soldered onto the lights connections. That way I can sit it somewhere visible to the drivers seat.
