Don't see 5.0l, but give it a shot anyways. I have a 97 GMC van with a 5.0l gasser. I have checked about everything and I'm stumped. The van will start up fine and runs smooth, then sometimes it will just shut off like you turn the key off. I checked plugs wires no spark when this happens. I've tested coil, module and various sensors, checked out ok. Theres not even a spark at the coil wire. Then sometimes it will start right back up and run perfect. It is getting fuel by the way. I've checked connections. Any suggestions?

No SES light? You said you checked the coil, how did you check it? I have seen broken "driver" wires on the coil in the past that cause the same simptoms that you have. If wires are fine i would test the crank sensor. Does the tachometer move when you crank the engine?

This is why I put my trucks on the Tech II or let someone diagnose it first. You can spend ALL day long chasing assumption but really its easier and a helluva lot cheaper to get it tested than fix it. Least you have an idea then.

Does the security light flash? any chance the vehicle had a remote car starter at any time previously? I sold a buddy of mine a chevy pickup and about 3 months after he bought it it started doing something very similiar to what you described. Usually when it stalls it wont start back up for a while? Getsome is right though, your better off finding someone with a good scanner, you'll pull your hair out and throw your savings out just throwing parts at the truck.

No ses, no codes. Had coil, module, and crank sensor tested. Checked drive wire connections, good. The van doesn't have a security light, remote starter or tach. There are times were it won't start for a while. I would have to tow it to the dealer, it likes to shut off on you on the road. The gauges and everything else seems to be getting power, except the ignition. ????? Thanks for replies.

think i found the problem. i would wiggle the module plug and it would kill the motor. i took the metal contacts out of the plug and bent them so they would make better contact and put some electrical grease on it. it has been running for several months now and haven't had a problem.

5.0 is a very underated engine they dont have lots of power but i think they would last as long or even longer than 350s if maintained
