I searched, but could not find the answer...
What brand and type on non syn trans fluid would you recommend for a change? I have approximately 35000 miles on my truck, and due to time constraints just do a drain and refill. Also do you feel like this should get enough of the old fluid out to make a difference? What about just a drain and refill now, and then the same procedure in about a month? Also what quantity of fluid should I expect to buy?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Tim

Thats what I did(drain and refill with conventional) before and it always worked for the plow trucks(once a year), thats also what I plannned for my truck but then I went to syn. Since the allison has a drian plug it makes life much eaiser. I would use any quality name brand fluid. I prefer valvoline or mobil personnaly. Whens the last time you changed your spin on filter and you know about the doughnut magnet? Since the gasket is reuasable it wouldnt be much more once you drian the pan to drop it and take a look and clean out the bottom. Put the plug back in before you drop the pan though and be carefull cuz it still holds darn near a quart or so it seems.

You fill through the dip stick. get a funnel. If you get any ATF on your frame rinse it off or it will eat your coating. Also atf on the manifold smells

It sits on top of the spin off trans filter.
I too am planning on changing my trany fluid. For a simple drain and filter how much oil should I order?

Assuming the stock (shallow) pan:
Pan capacity - approx 7.4 qts
Total capacity - approx 12.7 qts
So, buying 8 qts should be enough for a pan only drain, fill, and filter change, with some left over.

If you are going to go to synthetic oil do you need to get all of the old oil out of the tranny or just drain the pan and then fill up. Will the two types of oil mix ok?

The synthetic Trans Fluid is compatable with regular at least the namebrands that I have seen (Mobil 1, Penzoil etc.) and they say so on th lable. If you are a do it yourselfer here is a link to replacing the bulk of your trans fluid ......

mixing conventional and syn fluids shouldn't be an issue. I dropped my trans oil(drain plug only) at 8,000, then again at 25,000. I'm now at 46,000 and no issues. I figure I'm probably in the 90%+ range of full synthetic since a few quarts are 'stuck' in the tq converter.
Than again, if you want to do it the flush fill way, you can pull the "to cooler' line and fill as the old stuff comes out with the motor running. This however is better as a two person project, since I didn't have anyone handy to assist, I did it the old fashioned way.

It was my understanding that GM's fluid is synthetic.
