Detroit Diesel is now officially reporting it's sales/earnings as part of Freightliner Corp. which is wholley owned by Daimler Chrysler.
Freightliner also owns Sterling and Western Star. Those three brands combined represent about 38.5% of the US retail Class 8 sales. For 2004 it was 36%

The overwhelming majority of these trucks are Detroit Diesel 60 Series power or MDE 4000 engines sold by Detroit. CAT is also an important part. Detroit Diesel power is no longer an option in other US built heavy trucks. They used to be an option in all brands except Mack before DDC's ownership by Daimler Chrysler.

Paccar is the parent of Kenworth and Peterbuilt which commanded 24% of all US Class 8 retail sales. 75% of their trucks were sold with CAT engines.... Cummins in the balance.

International is by far Cummins' largest OE truck customer with it's ISM 11 L and 15 L ISX engines. International recently announced a joint venture with Germany's MAN and previewed 11 L and 13 L engines... debut 2007.

For nearly 70 years Mack has been the sole US heavy truck manufacturer to offer it's own line of truck diesels as well as transmissions and double reduction tandem axles (bogies). 98% or more of it's vehicles sold only with Mack power, now in 12 L size up to 460 hp. Mack's low volume CL heavy haul model comes with Cummins ISX power.
Mack's parent... Volvo truck power has been split between it's own Swedish built 12 L and the CUmmins ISX for apps over 450 hp.

Big Changes ahead at Mack/Volvo. Volvo is beginning to build it's 12 L in the Haggerstown MD Mack plant. That plant will soon be building all of Volvo North America's truck diesels. An all new 12 L is in the works to be shared by Mack and Volvo. Macks engine is likely to be dropped.

Interesting that after all of these years, the mack engine could be dropped....That might hurt their sales a bit.

Also, I wonder about DDC not being used in a truck other than a freightliner...The series 60 is a good engine with above average economy. Of course, KW and Petebilt don't want to buy an engine from their direct competition...

Good info Hoot..
Thanks

I hear that the Series 60's are going to be in trouble due to the stricter emissions. As far as firetrucks go, the Cummins is getting more and more popular. I had the choice with the Series 60 or the Cummins ISM and went with the Cummins in the 430 HP flavor when I spec'ed out our last fire engine. For a truck with a 44,000 GVW, it sure flys...
