: What Can/Cant Do with Exhaust?
Vidorcom 09-09-2009, 09:56 PM This is my first diesel I am disappointed with the Fuel Mileage and all the new Emission restrictions. I want the truck to breath better and of course have more of the turbo sound engaging. I would like to replace eveyrthing starting at the motor. Any suggestions?
RaceRngr1 09-09-2009, 10:12 PM What can you do with your exhaust? According to GM, look but don't touch! :D Welcome to the forums.
calabria69 09-09-2009, 10:16 PM look dont touch.....shit this truck is awesome!! EFI tuning, dpf delete, full exhaust, and dont look back!! good luck!!
1stgear 09-09-2009, 10:42 PM As stated, you can't touch the exhaust if you want to keep your factory warranty. UNLESS you have a really cool dealership. Short of that, the saying I like is you gotta pay to play. Personally, I wouldn't even want my truck if it were bone stock. If I couldn't get rid of the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and DOC (Diesel Oxygen Catalyst) and Muffler (This is what LMMs have), I would have gotten an older model DMAX. There are many vendors that offer DPF delete kits at pretty reasonable prices. Just throw a post up in the exhaust section and you'll get plenty of responses.
Welcome to the forum. It's a great place to learn about your truck.

Tyler@MPF 09-11-2009, 10:30 AM I would recomend a DPF delete, get a down-pipe back exhaust and a choice of tuning. If you want a handheld, I would recomend a Evo Race. If you have any questions let me know.

It's not only GM but Federal Law that you can't remove the DPF or any factory installed pollution control devices for that matter. Many do it though...
How many miles do you have on your truck? Diesel's do take a lot longer to break in than a gasser. Before you rip up your warranty, give it a while. New, I was getting ~16 MPG average. I'm just over 5000 now and 18+ is not uncommon, and by diesel standards, I'm still not broken in.
Vidorcom 09-11-2009, 02:23 PM I just hit 14,000 miles, in tow/haul the gas mileage seems to default 10mpg does not matter if it is a 5000lb load or 12,000lb load. With a 24 gallon tank I am not going to far, I did just order the Titan fuel tank 55 gallon so at least i can do 500 miles when hauling. Now its time to work on exhaust, I figure if they it voids warranty then if something happens it will be twin turbo installed.

I would highly recommend contacting your dealer that you will be using I have two dealers here where I am one says you cannot do anything to anything and the other told me to put a cold air intake on and that I can change my exhaust from the cat back ONLY not the turbo back LEAVE the DPF along if you want your warranty.....;. GO talk with your dealer.

MertCheney 09-14-2009, 02:32 PM I remember when cars came out with EGR's and Converters. It was popular to remove them or disable them. I don't think much was ever gained except more polution and problems with the engines. Today I would think that it is rare that anyone removes these items from the cars. Todays diesels provide over 300 HP some approaching 400 HP. These engines run very well considering how clean they really are. A 1990 Dodge with the 5.9 diesel had no polution control devices had less than 200 HP and wasn't partically clean running. I would much rather drive my Duramax with EGR and Cat.
My point is that I think we are too quick to remove these devices when future technoligy may resolve fuel economy and drivability issues. For offroad and racing do what you need to do. For onroad I believe that we should do the Mods that that don't defeat the polution devices. I am not a Tree Hugger but more like a realist. This is my opinion only and is not intended to critcize those who want to modify.
