: 19.5" Wheels on the way!
SLCox 09-09-2009, 10:18 PM I'm not a regular poster, but.. I use this site whenever I do anything on my truck including hours and hours of reading and searching on 19.5" wheels. I ordered my wheels today from Custom Performance Products out of Ohio. 4 Eagle Alloys with 2 rickson inners for 1517.00 to the door including caps and all hardware. Tires are coming locally from a good friend who owns a used tire shop, Cooper RM 190 in 225/70-19.5 for $157 a piece(his cost). He sells these to the local tow guys with very good results. I will mount and balance them on his machine myself. Any way I will post pics and let you guys know exactly how it all turns out so as to help anyone pondering this step to 19.5" setups. Wife actually gave me permission for this... I told her it would save money in the long run and be safer.:o: We haul a 16k toy hauler to Florida and Outer banks on a regular basis, plus I move my equipment on a gooseneck with weights in 18k range.
Looking forward to new look:D
Looking forward to the pics. Also will be interested to know your final cost.
dwrat 09-10-2009, 12:16 AM Im sure you will enjoy the new look but hate the ride at 60mph and above.
heartbeatcanada 09-10-2009, 04:04 PM Im sure you will enjoy the new look but hate the ride at 60mph and above.
Why is that???
SLCox 09-10-2009, 09:00 PM Not sure where the above 60mph observation is from. I own a Car Audio /vinyl graphics business so I have the opportunity to drive alot of 4500s, step vans, tow trucks etc that have 19.5" wheels. If I'm not lettering them I'm putting stereos or adding airbags etc to them and we pick up and deliver these vehicles alot. To me the ride is fine, not as smooth as a car or 1/2 ton (well some 1/2 tons aren't so smooth). No problems above 60 at all in any of the ones I've driven in the past 11 years. The ride is different, the way I would describe it is you get a better "feel" from the road?? The 19.5" tires respond to driver input much better and more accurately imhop. Not for everyone, but valuable if you tow heavy a lot. I have had a few get "loose" in the rain with mild straight treads. Heavy boats, straight tread 19.5" tires and rain = not good. Don't ask.
dwrat 09-11-2009, 01:59 AM Everyone I know with 19.5 or 22.5 wheels hate the ride at freeway speeds. They just can't get the to run smooth.
One buddy put some sand bag things inside the tires that really help out.
SLCox 09-11-2009, 07:48 AM I was planning on trying equal if I have problems. I have heard of rough rides from shops that are not familiar with mounting and balancing large truck wheels. If I am not happy with the highway ride I will not keep them. I hope this is not the case, but this is an experiment of sorts. I drove a 09 f450 the other day, 19.5s from the factory and it was smooth as could be. Fingers crossed!:o:
Davediesel3 09-11-2009, 09:22 AM look into centramatic on board wheel balancers. I have them on my dually (16" wheels) but at highway speeds I have NO issues they also make them for 19" wheels. I run re-caps on the rear and had 6.5 ounces on one wheel! I was so sceptical that I marked each wheel and weights so I could put them back if It did not work. They work GREAT!
SLCox 09-11-2009, 09:30 AM Thanks Dave, I'll look into that right away.
Davediesel3 09-11-2009, 09:38 AM NO problem. They are usually around $400 for the duallies but you will NEVER balance another tire on the vehicle you put them on, even if you change the tires! They are removeable so you can use them on your next truck as long as it has the same bolt pattern I got lucky and found my set on Flea bay so be sure to look there.
dwrat 09-11-2009, 11:50 AM I drove a 09 f450 the other day, 19.5s from the factory and it was smooth as could be. Fingers crossed!:o:
Factory wheels are hub centric and most aftermarket wheels are not except for Acloa who is the maker of wheels for Ford and many non-factory wheels.
Just be perpaired to battle with them and in time I am sure you will be happy.
dragoonranch 09-14-2009, 11:50 AM FWIW, mine ride great at speed. Just adjust your pressure to suit the weight you are hauling (or not hauling). I run ~55 in mine empty, and 60-75 depending on the load. Makes a huge difference.
SLCox 09-17-2009, 08:45 PM Wheels and tires have been here since last week, mounted and balanced them today. The Rickson inners took the most weight and look more out of round than the Aluminum outers???? Any way, the wheels are hub centric, so hopefully I won't have any odd vibrations. One problem, the lip on the outer aluminum wheel will not take any kind of conventional weight, so I couldn't balance them? Fronts did fine, used sticky weights, less than 2 oz on each, and looked very good on the machine. Any ideas on the rear outer wheels as far as balancing? I will probably end up with equal. I will quickly go to the centramatic setup if I have problems. I'll see if I can get pics up tomorrow.:D
