I got my new dually with the d-max about a month ago.I put about 1500 miles on it and wanted to change the engine oil to synthetic. This is my first diesel, and someone told me not to change to synthetic until it breaks in.In my past gassers I always went to synthetic right away.Does anyone know or have an opinion on what kind of oil works best or when to change over.

I'v always change at the first 3K oil chankge, prior to that I have heard that rings may or may not be seated, do that what I have done. One the 5 th Dmax now 2 personal and 3 for work plus 2 of the guys that work for me have them and followed the same cange rule, 60k on the 01, 48k on the 02, 22k on the 03, 6k on the dually and 4k on the 05. Note my 01 nad -5 are worked/played hard and no prob's oil wise. Mobil 1 1300 Delvac with wix filters.

I like synthetic oil for a few reasons: Superior protection, cold weather starting (no heater required in MI) longer drain intervals, better mileage etc. I use Amsoil Series 3000 5w-30 with their dual remote filter system. I also converted my entire driveline to Amsoil synthetic. Just added the Edge EZ and my last tank averaged 20.3 with 2/3 highway miles at 65 and 1/3 city driving.

Every statement on this subject is just an opinion but here comes mine. I have used nothing but synthetic motor oil in all my vehicles for over 25 years until I got this new D/A. Dino oil has improved much recently and I now have difficulty seeing any real advantage to using it in the diesel unless you live in a cold climate. I think after two regular dino changes I will try one synthetic change and look for some improvement in fuel mileage and engine temp. I really suspect this motor will live out its life with me on a diet of Delo 400 or some similar product.

An opinion I respect is the one that states that Dino oil will control soot better than synthetic when both are changed at say 8000 miles. If I had better oil filtration on this motor I would use synthetic and extended drain intervals. I'm too lazy to make that filtration investment so once again cheap dino wins. The soot problem is one of the reasons I use Stanadyne as I suspect that keeping injectors clean will reduce soot formation

Another often repeated opinion I respect says that dino oil ought to be changed after 6 months but synthetic can stay in the sump for a year or more.

If parked for an extended period of time cold start wear will be less if the motor is protected with synthetic oil because synthetic clings to metal better. Advantage - a little.

Whatever you choose, keep in mind that the payback on good oil filters will exceed that of expensive motor oil. Mobil !, Wix, Napa Gold etc are good choices for this low RPM motor.

Finally, results differ because use differs so choose what seems to fit your own personal situation and enjoy the ride.

I'm nuts about this D/A combination and hope GM does not screw it up with the new design in 07. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

I already switched to red line diesel synthetic at about 1500 miles. My truck has about 3200 on it now.Did I screw anything up by running synthetic those last 2k?Should I drain this and put dino oil back in it?if so what kind of dino oil?.As for the synthetics is this red line any good?I heard it is,I have run red line in motorcycles for years without one problem.Does anyone know what the dealer uses,I was given a free oil change from the dealer, but I am worried they probably use crap. Thanks for everyones input. Don't mean to change the subject, but this question is kind of in line. Anyone heard of or tried a product called "motorkote" (www.motorkote.com).

I saw a display in a truckstop a while back. They claim a lot of things: cooler temps, reduced rpms to maintain same speed, increased fuel economy. It looks like the additive is good for gas or diesel. Wondering if it's just another form of "snake oil"

Sounds like snake oil. Gas or Diesel? Less RPM's?:wtf1:
