: where to put the PMD sealent
Kartoon 09-07-2009, 05:30 PM I got everything I need to put my PMD in the bumper but got one question. I have the Arctic Silver paste and I have a gasket that was supplied with the new PMD. I thought I read on here to just use one or the other? Is that true?
Now for the paste, do I bolt the PMD down to the heatsink and then just run a thin bead around the PMD? Or do I put it on the underside and when I bolt it down it squishes out?
JMJNet 09-07-2009, 05:38 PM Use the Arctic Silver (AS5) in between the PMD metal plate and Heatsink.
No need for the gasket. The AS5 is the gasket to help with heat transfer and better.
Very very thin layer of AS5, the thinner the better on both surface.
Also take out the plastic transistor cap.
If you want, you can put a little bit of silicon rtv on the edge but not in between just to make sure that there is no water. I did not put rtv in mine and it was fine for 2 years. It looks like the AS act as water sealant.
doober 09-07-2009, 07:49 PM Is there only one transistor cap or two? Just wondering because i am getting ready to relocate mine.
TedReminder 09-07-2009, 07:52 PM 2 caps.
Ted
Kartoon 09-07-2009, 07:53 PM alright so just spread it around on the metal part on the bottom side of the PMD. Nothing on the 2 diamand shaped plastic spots?

Exactly, the 2 dia spots are the transistor. They don't have contact with the heatsink so you don't need the AS5.
Kartoon 09-07-2009, 09:23 PM awesome. Will be finally doing the swap this week.
GOBLUESIXFIVE 09-08-2009, 12:12 AM I appreciate u asking bout this bc i was just about to ask te same thing. thanks
Kartoon 09-08-2009, 07:28 AM I know, I didnt want to do it wrong and then kill my brand new PMD!
doober 09-08-2009, 04:05 PM Just one question, where would one find the Arctic Silver Paste to buy? Thanks,
GOBLUESIXFIVE 09-08-2009, 06:10 PM unfortunately i just found out that my pmd isnt bad its the injctor pump....fml
Kartoon 09-08-2009, 08:41 PM Just one question, where would one find the Arctic Silver Paste to buy? Thanks,
Radio Shack. It is in a small tube. At the store I went to it was hanging up above the cabinets that hold the fuses and that sort of stuff. $10.
Kartoon 09-09-2009, 07:39 PM ok so another 'dumb' question. How much of the AS5 should I put on? A lot? Is there such thing as too much/ not enough.
JMJNet 09-09-2009, 10:42 PM Very very thin layer. In this case, too much is NOT good.
Its purpose is to even out the surface.
Kartoon 09-10-2009, 07:06 AM hmm, I put some on and spread it around, I didnt really load it up so Im hoping that I did it right. I do have a bunch of the AS5 in that tiny little tube left
JMJNet 09-10-2009, 10:31 AM Sounds correct. Put a small pinch and spread it around nicely covering all the surface. That tube should last you a long time may be 5 or 10 PMD and/or CPU installation.
Kartoon 09-10-2009, 05:37 PM if for some reason I had to take the PMD off the heatsink, is the sealant re-usable or does it have to be wiped clean and new stuff put on? Like if I was on the road with my spare PMD and had to switch it?
JMJNet 09-10-2009, 07:19 PM I don't think it is reusable but chances are very small that you have to do this again in a few years.

When using Arctic Silver on Computer CPU's we use Isopropyl rubbing alcohol to remove the old compound before re-applying.
I would do the same thing for this also IMO.
