My dad just recently bought 2 1994 6.5 turbo diesels. I am thinking about taking the one with the spun bearing on the crankshaft, fixing the bearing, and then putting it in my 77 1 ton chevy. I am wondering if there is anything else i should worry about with the motor since it has a spun bearing and what all problems i will run into putting the 6.5 in my 77. The 77 chevy has a 454 in it right know so as far as i know the 6.5 should drop right in?

You can probably find a 82 6.2 Dsl powered truck or later for less than out of pocket than what it might cost to to do the conversion on the 77.Plus you can sell the 77/454,maybe enough to buy a factory equipped .6.2 .

rebuilding a 6.5 will run at least 2.5 grand if you DIY,add to that a mech IP for ease of conversion.
Is it worth it? you be your own judge.
I got a realy nice looking 76 chevy 1500 with a blow engine given to me,i was thinking of bolting the good running 6.2 (only 60 k on it)out of my 89 in it.
I think that! would be worth it.

the only reason i want to pull the 454 and put in the 6.5TD is for better fuel mileage while pulling a trailer. I really dont want to get rid of the 77 because i stripped it down to the frame 2 years ago and restored it.

The turbocharger will be in the way of the AC box on the 77 but there are ways to work around that and still have the AC. A banks turbo kit from a 6.2 would work for that. Other than that it would drop right in.

I would be sure to clean out the oil pan real good when its off and be sure to check the crankshaft for damage from the spun bearing. For good measure you might take the crank out and have it machined and replace all the main and rod bearings It should only be a couple hundred dollars. I have just replaced a bad bearing and changed the oil and nothing else and didnt have any problems but if money isnt too much of an issue id be sure to do it right. There shouldnt be any need to take the engine all the way apart or rebuild it just because of a rod bearing. If you do decide to take it apart, just note which piston/rod came from what cylinder so it can be put back in the same cylinder. Then take the block to the machine shop and have it cleaned and checked for cracks. Make sure they flush out the oiling system if you go that far. Then reassemble with the remachined crank, new bearings and gaskets and you should be good to go. That should all cost less than say... 750 at the most. The main thing is the time that it takes, it will take you a week or so but you would have a nice clean engine in good shape and you could paint it so it looked nice and restored like the rest of the truck.

Hope this helps!

what is all involved in swaping the stock turbo setup to a banks kit for a 6.2?

What brg spun? A rod or a main?
A spun main brg requares line honing the entire main bore lineup, and that only IF it will stay within specs for the stroke.
In any case its advisable to strip the engine completely and do a rebuild from the ground up.

the crankshaft bearing is spun

the crankshaft bearing is spun

But is it a main or a rod bearing? They both are on the crank.

the crankshaft bearing is spunthere's main crank brgs and there's connecting rod brgs, all of them ride the crankshaft.A spun rod brg means it is spun in the rod, wich means the ID of the rods bore is affected and out of specs( not a big deal) when a main brg spins inside the main brg cap and the block it becomes a big deal as that main bore is most likely affected and no longer will clamp the brg shells properly

idk about that. i havent pulled the pan off to look. if i go ahead and put it in my 77 now though i have decided to do it right and totally rebuild it since i would have to put money into getting the turbo set up to work also.

From what I understand the cranks in the 6.5s are not grindable because they are surface hardened. Machining them will remove the hardened area and it will be too soft and wear quickly.
