Well the clutches came yesterday afternoon, and the truck was done by 10:30pm. After adding fluid, and more fluid, and more fluid, I took it out for a spin. I spent an hour taking the trans to school again, but now is shifting sweet. Firm, but not harsh. Torque converter feels great.

Thanks to Eric (dmaxallitech) for the hand holding. I took things apart a few times for practice and second guessing myself, I did have some extra time on my hands:D

Was it worth it to do it myself? I feel that it was, especially since it's working. Also I didn't trust anyone local for the job. I'll be very comfortable upgrading again if the need arises.

Cool. Now come do mine...;)
I have been thinking about doing a transgo and converter myself in mine. Doesn't look terrible hard from reading the install instructions for the transgo...

Makes you happy when you put that effort into it and it works good eh?:ro)

Hey nar, how's the bird hunting out where you are? The elk/deer hunting here is great, but always looking for a bird hunt. Maybe we could do a day of tranny work and a day of bird hunting. I'm always up for a road trip, maybe we could find a wolf or two:cool:

What kind of birds? Turkey, dove, geese? I haven't seen any wolves yet, although if I do get one I have to keep my mouth shut about it anyway... Censored
Lately been lots of mountain lions around. Not in the mountains I mean here by the town and farms.

Did you have a shop reset the trans so it learned fresh, or did you just drive it? How many miles did you have on these stock clutches? I have 10800 right now, but haven't ever used above the 65 hp level on the predator so I would hope my clutches are less burned.

I didn't have the taps reset, just drove it. The trans learned fast, it was shifting nice, almost right away. T/H mode is taking a bit longer.

My clutches had 12k miles on them, about 6-7k miles with predator on 85/100 hp. I did many W.O.T. blasts thru fourth gear(maybe 100), and maybe a dozen complete(thru fifth) boosted WOT passes down the quarter-mile. The C3/C4 clutches were discolored, how bad were they? don't know. I have nothing to compare them with, but it felt nice starting out fresh.

The C3/C4 clutches are easy to check once you're in the trans.

I'm heading to the drag strip on Friday and Sunday. I'll have the propane and N20 installed:eek: I might be going back in the trans again at a later date, but I'm not afaid anymore of the voodoo witchcraft that I thought lurked in the mystery of an automatic transmission.;)

I've got a bunch of pictures, but when loading I found out my lovely wife had changed the setting on the camera. The file size on the pics are huge and won't allow me to resize and load. I'm terrible at this computer stuff!

Thank-you, Cougar.

Sorry the pics are not better. Here's a quick list if anyones interested in the job. Remember, This was my first attempt, so experts please add or subtract to make things easier for the next guy.

Disconnect batterys
Remove right side tire and wheel well
Disconnect exhaust and remove starter
Remove converter bolts

The rest is pretty straight forward

I used a rented trans jack. The front of the truck was lifted so the frame was 2'3" off the floor.

Dissasembly was not tough. The transgo book was needed because the basic directions that came along with the kit are very lacking. Make sure of proper installation of spiral rings, and snap rings. You'll need a good pair of snap ring pliers because some of the rings are a bear to remove. Other than that just normal hand tools, oh yeah, a torque wrench is needed also.

Other things I needed were: trans/transfer case gasket, trans gel, lock tite(converter bolts), filters, fluid(about 4/5 gals.) you might need pan gasket and rear trans gasket.

I did the job myself. The removal was 4hrs, and install about the same. I had trans apart along time, but I think about four to six hours(with breaks) to do the trans work. It was nice walking away from it for a while and then coming back fresh to resume.
