: need help convincing wife I "need" a diesel
likkerpig 05-18-2005, 11:49 AM Ok guys, I'm new to the forums and have been reading lots for the past month or so (I've soaked up far more
than I ever thought possible...). I'm looking at getting new truck in the next 3-6 months
(maybe more, maybe less) but the problem is coming from my other half- she says
I don't "need" a 3/4 ton pickup, and a diesel to boot! Now, of course I don't "need" it, I WANT it. I drive
my vehicles for 100k miles or more, currently have 118k on my 98 explorer, and she's startin to go down.
Now I can respect her input, and I guess I don't really "need" a 3/4 ton diesel, but my arguments are as follows:
1, i'm paying for it in all aspects (insurance, loan, fuel, maintenance, etc...)
2, i'm driving it 99% of the time
3, better highway mileage
4, engine built to last 250k miles
5, heavy duty transmission built to last
6, resale value higher
7, comparable around town mileage compared to gasser
8, it's what I want, and because of all the above, it's what I'm getting...
To her credit, I can see the following points:
1, diesel is more expensive than gas
2, I don't tow or haul very heavy items frequently, maybe 2-3x per year max- nothing that a 1/2 ton couldn't handle
3, I drive 98% in town, 20 miles round trip to and from work daily
4, 3/4 ton diesel is more expensive, re: price of vehicle
5, she's grew up on a farm, and doesn't want to hear the diesel "noise" (me, i'm a former city guy and LOVE the sound of a diesel!)
6, I don't NEED a truck that big
Now here's what I ask of you.... give me any and all positive points that I'm missing in trying to justify/ sell her on
a 3/4 ton diesel so I can work on the convincing her it's what I "need". Thanks guys, and great forums!!!
dogger 05-18-2005, 11:59 AM The Diesel trucks are not as lould as they used to be. First gen cummins.
McRat 05-18-2005, 12:02 PM 9) I'm the Man of the House. Go in the kitchen and make me a sandwich! :D
Seriously, the diesel for me is a "hot rod" truck. I could have bought a Lightning (no back seats/no serious towing), or an SRT-10 (ditto), but I would have been stuck with 12mpg hwy on Premium fuel with less features.
Yes, a 1/2 ton gasser is more financially responsible. But they seem to sell plenty of sportscars even though a Camry is more "practical".

GMC-2002-Dmax 05-18-2005, 12:05 PM Tell the wife that a gas engine will net you 30% less fuel economy and will last maybe 1/2 as long, diesels do not need tune-ups, they require little maintenance other than fuel filters and oil changes.
They are offering a $1000 savings in the power package option.
You really want it.............
And if all else fails tell her you will buy her something she wants...............bribery goes a long way.........):h ):h ):h ):h ):h

. I traded a Chevy Avalance for my dmax CC - the Av was cheaper on fuel - same mpg but diesel is at least 10 % more expensive. Interior exactly the same, the Av was much quieter and smoother but I always dreamed from the dmax....
The wife drives the dmax 90 % of the time as she drove the Av before since I have a company car. There is no real logical explanation to have a dmax if you don't tow a big trailer - I have "mine" just for fun. Its definitely stronger built than a 1500 chassis - that convinced the wife finally, she wanted a real heavy duty truck - driving is dangerous around here....
Besides that:
Everything costing more than 1.000$ I decide, below that the wife decides....
Got Juice? 05-18-2005, 01:12 PM All you need to say to her are these immortal words
"Diesel Fumes Make Me Horny"
That should do it!
TNRGreene 05-18-2005, 04:07 PM I had that EXACT problem. I sent her to the dealer to bring it so I could see it. She got home got out & said "I want this truck!" Done deal from there. Good luck
a_chevelle 05-18-2005, 04:23 PM Tell her you want a 25' 5th wheel to go camping twice a month. It worked for me!:grd:
Denali02 05-18-2005, 04:26 PM McRat - LOL!!!
My sell was slightly different do to our other vehicles couldn't support the heavier weight of our new trailer. The other was the durability of the D/A, braking, safety, and it's wicked fun to modify.
#8 is really the case. You can rationalize everything.
So the question is do you wear a zipper in the front or side ;)
likkerpig 05-18-2005, 04:44 PM ^ now THAT's cold!! I was just hoping to open her up to the idea of a diesel nicely before I'm forced to say "here's what i'm getting..." And spending the next XX weeks in the dog house...
BIGBLOCKBILL 05-18-2005, 04:45 PM If you can afford it and it's really what you want, than by all means go for it. You won't be happy spending your money on what the wife wants you to drive. Been there done that,3 years of misery with a POS F150. I finally divorced her to get away from the truck ):h .
RobertCG68 05-18-2005, 05:26 PM do what i did just go buy one and call her on the way home and tell her you have a surprise for her
Ask her does she really need 200 pairs of shoes and purses to match?;)
Seriously have you taken her to the dealer for a test drive with you? I also grew up on a dairy farm and these trucks do not sound like the tractors or the old diesel trucks used to.
I guess McRat is lucky:D I'm trying to talk him into getting a new Duramax and giving me Big Blue. I cannot stand driving my mini-van any longer -:t
Jackpine 05-18-2005, 06:38 PM Take her to the dealer, and she'll see that glint in your eyes and that drool  on your face when you’re out test driving. She'll quickly figure out that she's lost the battle. Then take her out to dinner. :ro) :ro)
When it come to a man and his truck, it’s what he wants, not what he needs. You can be practical on the other 10K things in life.:grd:
homepukes 05-18-2005, 08:14 PM [QUOTE=Kat_]Ask her does she really need 200 pairs of shoes and purses to match?;)
LOL My wife is the spender in our family. Like she always tells me, "Life is so short you might as well have what makes you happy." I'll add this part, "if you can afford it."

That's my motto :ro) I got Big Blue today and McRat got a new one :exactly:
tony00 05-19-2005, 02:43 AM I guess that you spent your "credit" ;) on "other things". Do more honeys dues:( , the real big ones, and bring it up later:D . Now I have just the opposite. My wife made me "upgrade":ro) my month old 05 2500HD to a newer 05 3500 D/A.:exactly:
Tony
Ringer68 05-19-2005, 05:36 AM Go buy it than tell her. Sometimes it is easier to get forgiveness than to recieve permission.:D Besides that, 2 weeks in the dog house is well worth many years of happiness.;)
dncasey 05-19-2005, 05:56 AM What is she driving? If she needs a new vehicle also, you have it made. Look at my signature. Yes, the Benz is going to be expensive, but it is a diesel and she loved the one we test drove.
Slide 05-19-2005, 08:22 AM Diamonds! I have found they are very effective at not only shortening the stay in the doghouse but actually cancelling the trip out to it. Go buy the truck, stop and buy her a nice diamond necklace on the way home and call and tell her you have a surprise. When she gets mad at you about the truck tell her that's not the surprise this is...then hand her the necklace.
dieseldavesr 05-19-2005, 08:59 AM everyone is going about it the wrong way,USE SUGAR! i help out around the house, clean the bathroom,do the food shopping,i even cook once in awhile, bring home flowers, take her out to dinner, heck i even give her dog a bath, and to my creditlol my wife says she has lost weight sense i started doing the cooking!loli know i know laugh it up,but i tell you one thing,i know where my truck, boat, motorcycle, gun collection etc etc is located and i use my toys all the time, good love too!lol
aka108 05-19-2005, 01:37 PM Ask her how she might feel if with your last breath on your death bed you summon her to your side and whisper in her ear "I really wanted a diesel and you wouldn't let me have it".
dmaxjrod 05-19-2005, 05:46 PM My wife told me to tell you to grow a set, and just go buy it like I did
likkerpig 05-19-2005, 06:24 PM you guys are the greatest man, i'm just rollin here!! My wife told me to tell you to grow a set, and just go buy it like I did I'm like 99% sure that's what it's going to come down to, I just prefer to try and do the nice thing before I have to turn into a dink and do what I want anyways. Been there, done that enough times before...now when I do what I want I get the "Oh, that's right, you're a man..." line. Which means I'm pretty much in the clear for whatever I just did.
Any other statistics I can use? Anyone know of any crash test ratings for 3/4 ton trucks, just out of curiousity?

Here is the ratings system I used
Me Truck - vehicle I hit car I win
Me Truck - vehicle I hit 18 Wheeler I lose
so I guess 50/50 is the crash rating???:p: :p:

tbyrne 05-20-2005, 10:20 AM Yup, same here. Just came home and said that I bought another truck. We each have our own vehicles so it's no big deal but some households are different. Get her involved in the experience (research, test drive ect...) if she is part of the decision making process.
RUNNINHORN 05-20-2005, 01:11 PM Ok guys, I'm new to the forums and have been reading lots for the past month or so (I've soaked up far more

so she wears the pants in the family?:lol:
EngineerBill 05-20-2005, 10:02 PM tell her that with the diesel you can burn bio-diesel so then you can be friendly to the environment.
GMC2500HD 05-20-2005, 10:12 PM Why should you have to make your wife feel good about something that you want to do? I can never understand this. If you, the man of the house, want something you should be able to go and get it with no recourse. There should be no reason to convince anyone. Just leave work one day early and go buy it and show it to her when you get home. She will be ok with it. Good luck
jhondra 05-21-2005, 12:35 AM :iamwithst
Yeah...you're not married, are you. At least if you were, you're not anymore.
Go ahead and strut your testes, but marriage is a partnership. You do the kinda stuff above and "man of the house" or not, you deserve everything she has waiting for you.
I'm not saying hide and cower, but treat her like your best friend, respect her, and you will BOTH enjoy the truck.
I would be pissed if she went and bought a $40k car without at least mentioning it and going over it. Beyond that, if you can AFFORD IT, then there is no way she can reasonably keep telling you NO (unless it competes with her spending..grin). If she does, you're in the wrong relationship.
I drove my last truck for 10 years, and loved it. Wouldn't have even thought of getting a new one if it wasn't that our kids are growing up, and we wanted to have a travel trailer to go camping. Investing in them.
Hell, she kept telling me to go buy a new truck. Didn't need one or want one. But I sure felt bad making my 1995 half ton Z71 try to tug that 25' slide TT all over, and getting the boys in the back in kid seats was no fun. Love the new truck, and I don't have to feel guilty over it or even suffer the vengence of the wife over it. Trust me, women have memories longer than most California Redwoods, and they do not like being "end-arounded".
They are also tougher than most of us, and bide their time. Why people decide to FIGHT with their mate is beyond me. Guess I'm lucky. She is my best friend.

DURAtotheMAX 05-21-2005, 07:53 PM Any other statistics I can use? Anyone know of any crash test ratings for 3/4 ton trucks, just out of curiousity?
Im 99% sure (I actually checked up on the crash test ratings a while ago) the HD's have a 4 star rating for the driver and either a 3 or 4 star rating for the Passenger. Im pretty sure it was 4 star for the passenger. But remember, this is into a concrete wall. The HD's are so much bigger than mostly all other vehicles on the road (save for 18 wheelers of course) and therefore will fare much better in actuality than the "technical 4 star rating" sudjests. Even a big vehicle like a Crown Vic or SUV would probably not be "equal" to an HD in a crash.
While thinking safety, you could say "well im going to buy a diesel truck. I can either buy a new HD that meets the latest crash test standards, or I can buy a lightly used 1999 HD that doesnt even have airbags. Which would you like me to have??):h " I think you can safely (no pun intended:D ) say that you will be very very well protected in a new 2500HD. Go for the DMAX!!!!
