.......sounds like someone is slightly tapping a wrench against a piece of metal under the hood when at idle, any idea what this could be?

Does it make white smoke at idle when warmed up?

If you have a Predator (I thought I told you to get one) check injector balance rates. If over 4 you might have an injector that is misbehavin'.

hopefully just an injector problem. Is it steady or intermittent? does it change with load, rpm or both. Also id check the oil to see if its overfull

Also keep it mind that even though the engine is quiet, it is still a diesel. While it's probably the smoothest diesel sold, they do make "interesting" noises.

Find someone in your area with a TechII or a Predator and check injector balance rates.

I see you have 5" exhaust , you might check for any clearance issues up near the front, maybe its vibrating against the floor or frame.. just a thought

might check to see that it is not an exhaust leak, or maybe the EGR loose causing a leak. sometimes that air escaping makes a strange noise like you are getting. had a similar sounding leak on my EGR blocker plate.

The infamous "Duramax Tick" Mine dos it for a while after each oil change. Search the TSB section - said to be harmless.

I have the tick as well. I read the TSB on this board, and also had the dealer print out the TSB dealer say's it's normal. No white smoke and all stock.

I had an interesting noise like that in mine, and it was the EGT probe leaking -- HOW annoying. Hope you figure it out if you haven't.

If it sounds like an old fashioned type writer it's definitely the Dmax tick (the one described in the TSB). GM says it's harmless. Mine did it between 2k and 4k miles. Then after an oil change it disappeared. Haven't heard it since :confuzeld

Well, the noise you hear is noted by GM as "nothing to worry about, won't hurt a thing". That is what they told me about it anyway. I don't like it at all!! I just returned from a 3K trip down to Utah,Arizona,Nevada and California hoping that some good hard running(75&80 MPH just about all the way) would make it go away but, no such luck. They say it a noise from the rear crankshaft bearing and it's nothing to worry about! I'm not satisfied with that. If I wanted to buy a 40K $ Timex I would have done just that. I don't mind diesel noises but tick tack tick tack just don't get it for me. They have known about this since 2002 and have posted that they know with the dealerships nation wide. Not happy in Oregon......

Mine does it also. It is slowly going away with milage. After I get @3K miles on my oil change, it goes away.

Mine went away at about 5-8000 miles, haven't heard it since.

I have the same problem but it is getting louder. I just changed the oil for the 2nd time (3000 miles) and suprisingly, it is worse....I may bring it to the dealer

I just starting getting the tapping sound you guys are descibing. It only seems to do it at idle. If I tap the accelerator it stops momentarily and then comes back.

I was sitting at a drive thru waiting for my order listing to a tic..tic....tic.tic... that did not seem to have a rhythm to it. I got home and crawled under the truck to locate its location. "Hmmm....seems to be comming from the...trany?" I put my hand on the Transfer case skid plate, it stops! I had rocks on the skid plate...Ah, thats it. Cleaned out all the rocks, random ticking stopped.
You all may want to check the skid plates if equipped. Just may be that simple for some.
I dont have the "Tap...Tap...Tap... that is decribed here, but time will tell. I can't wait.

just my $.02

Mine has some kind of tap tap or tic tic when it is cold. I think it comes from front of the truck under the grill. I thought it is air or something trapped in one of the rad/coolers. I was thinking to take it in.
