: 2003 2500HD Front Hub Assembly
1grtdrummer 05-18-2005, 10:53 AM 2003 Chevy 2500HD D/A 48,000 MI
When turning left front end would make loud squeeking noise, only when cold. After about a mile noise goes away. Jacked left side up and found burt hub assy. To find this wiggle tire top/bottom like checking ball joints.
I was told by a friend it should be covered to 100K mi; after I changed it out. Can anyone tell me if it is covered under warranty. Calling stealer again now!
-:t Well I changed the passenger side for about $380 just for parts. -:t
Thanks

thinkenbig 05-21-2005, 10:48 AM um, No advice on this yet. was just getting on to ask the same question. or if its no covered under warranty if anyone knows where one can be found besides the stealer. grtdrnmmer let me know what you find bud.
thanks.
BlueOx03 05-21-2005, 11:07 AM It's covered on the 3/36, after that it's on you or your extended warrenty. I got mine from GMdieseltech.com for around 240 IIRC. If you can change a tir, you can do it your self and save cash....
Idle_Chatter 05-21-2005, 02:15 PM Nope, not on basic warranty as previously stated, wheel bearings are not "engine/drivetrain" and are 3yr/36K. Dealer will want $400 to $700 for the part and $300 to $500 for labor ($700 to $1000 total). I got mine from DmaxAlliTech for $238.92 and was going to self-install but got a short notice to drive out to Idaho so had a local truck service shop in Ohio put it on for $59.87. Out of warranty or without an extended one - this is the only way to go!
thinkenbig 05-22-2005, 06:35 PM Well I talked to the service guy at the dealer and he said it should be covered because it’s listed as a “Hub Assembly” not a bearing and it is considered part of the drive train on a 4x4 truck, so well see, but defiantly if its not covered Ill do it my self I already looked at every parts store in town and no one has it so GMdieseltech.com might be getting some more business. Only thing is that it’s pretty bad and I don’t want to drive it like this and if I have to order it will take a while to get here, but that stealer want right under $400 for it and they said 3 hours labor I think they are stretching it I think it can be done in about an hour or hour and a half.
But thanks anyway guys and for the heads up about GMdieseltech.com having the bearings.
MaxRock 05-23-2005, 12:12 PM Every vehicle that i have owned, I would repack the wheel bearings every 35k miles or so. If I understand correctly, these trucks have sealed bearings that have to be replaced? If this is true, in a preventative maintenance program, how often should they be changed?
Thanks,
MaxRock
thinkenbig 05-23-2005, 01:16 PM Yes they are sealed and you just have to wait for them to go bad, and at $240 at the cheapest I’ve seen I would just wait for it to go bad might be at 80,000 like this one on my 2500HD or at 150,000 like the ones on my old S-10 you never know.
MaxRock 05-23-2005, 01:56 PM thanks for the info...I forgot to mention that my truck is a 2WD, does this make any difference???
MaxRock
thinkenbig 05-25-2005, 02:09 PM Oh yeah 2wd IS different than the 4wd you should just have a wheel bearing, nothing for the front axles. It may be cheaper than the 4wd hub bearings but not sure I have never dealt with a 2wd one.
JRZ2500HD 05-26-2005, 10:37 AM I am having the same sympthums, I have 44,000 miles. What all is involved with changing them and do they come as a pair or single. Thanks Jr
spoolnaround 05-31-2005, 07:09 PM They come single, a right or a left. I just replaced my drivers side @ $285 in parts alone. I was driving around my parents property and hit an old well head that had been capped, a couple of days later was making noise like it was dry. I think I might have broken a rim too as it is making a creaking noise when I turn or get on the brakes Censored I have had my Weld wheel for less than 2 months!
ockgator 05-31-2005, 09:43 PM Spool: check lug nut torque... loose wheels make a weird creaking noise also 140 ft. lbs.
JRZ2500HD 06-01-2005, 12:57 PM Well I needed my truck this weekend so I broke down and payed dealer price. $396 out the door. I wish I could have waited and got one from dmallitech, but what can you do. It was pretty simple to do, well worth doing it yourself.
neverenuf 06-01-2005, 01:11 PM Just had my right side hub and ABS sensor replaced at the stealer. Took it in for ABS light on, found out bearings were gone and wheel wobbled enough to damage ABS sensor. New hub and ABS sensor installed was $554.21. I didn't even feel a vibration when driving, tech said the wheel was about to fall off. You can get the hub, part # 89059059 from gmpartsdirect.com for $188 plus shipping. Wish I would have known it was bad, I could have saved myself the $130 labor charge and $10 "environmental charge".
1grtdrummer 06-01-2005, 01:59 PM To All,
GM knows it's a problem, gettin' my money back! Got the stealler workin' on it now.
Remember just 45K~48K miles on truck when went bad. I was on a trip when I felt something in the frontend.

thinkenbig 06-01-2005, 08:21 PM You buy them as singles and I did not do mine on my Dmax but have done them on other trucks they are not hard to do.
Check this out…(they are about $400 from the stealer) http://www.gmdieseltech.com/store2/cart.php?target=product&action=view&product_id=16232&category_id=248
JRZ2500HD 06-02-2005, 08:35 AM The worst part is that I never felt it either. I only had a noise sometimes. But when I jacked it up there was about 1.5" to 2" of play in it. If I didn't check it I wouldn't have known it.

That's some scarry sh*t. Is it just the bearings that crap our early or the hub somehow causing it? I need to change my drivers side just for piece of mind. I did feel some vibration about 3 weeks before the ABS light came on, thought a wheel weight fell off. Took it back to Sears, they rebalanced all wheels and the vibration was gone. Tech at GM said he couldn't believe they didn't say anything about the play in the hub. That would be neat to have a wheel come off pulling my 40' 5er.
