: gonna try something new want advice
bogger 09-02-2009, 07:48 AM ok so here's the deal i haven't pulled BadMax all year long and now if everything goes right i will be pulling saturday on a hard packed track up home. granted i only have a stock charger but would i be hurting or helping myself by building boost at the line this time? ive never done it before but i was gonna try building boost till the brakes won't hold to get up to speed quick and maybe tag 4th gear at the end. i'm hoping to draw test puller to try out this method but let me know what you guys think. keep in mind i'm still in the 500rwhp ballpark with the 3.73 gears and 33inch sts's. also front hanging weight and 24inch hitch height
moss022 09-02-2009, 09:34 PM imo, i dont think it mattered much with a stock charger on my truck. do it as long as you dont think you will blow through the tires
MarkBroviak 09-02-2009, 09:57 PM Becareful to not blow your cv's apart building boost. This is your main concern.

putting it in 4low when next to the sled and locking the front locker when turning to straighten up to the sled before backing up. doing that i never had a problem with my front end, only my back. i have built some good boost with my stock turbo doing this before aswell
dmaxlover 09-02-2009, 10:10 PM Building boost with stock charger = not worth even trying. All your going to do is delay the time it takes to take the accelerator pedal from the idle position to the floor position.
Unless you want to look like a fool, don't even consider trying 4th gear. It takes much more than 500hp to hold 4th.

good point john. the last time i pulled, i stuck 4th and barly maintained for a short time. that was with an a5k
Josh2002cc 09-02-2009, 10:27 PM 4 gear = hero gear for a reason.
With my stock turbo and around 480-500ish horsepower I just put the gear selector in "3" and let her rip.
05Smoker 09-02-2009, 10:47 PM I'm all for building as much boost as possible on whatever charger if it's a good track. The faster it spools the faster you get to 3rd and get wheel speed. 4th is not gonna happen at 500 hp especially with 33 STS tires.

x2
Papuller86 09-02-2009, 10:56 PM stock charger here and ALLWAYS built boost at the line, i can leave the line at about 10 to 12 pounds of boost, 4low, tow hau onl, stand on the brake till it cant hold it anymore and let her rip works much better for me that way,
bogger 09-02-2009, 11:20 PM hey thanks guys. and trust me i know 4th is hero gear but sometimes they let us get out deep and if that's the case i want to be gaining speed not just taching high. but more than likely i will stick with what i know which has always been 3rd gear and no boost. i'll let ya'll know what goes down.
bogger 09-14-2009, 09:11 PM ok guys to get back to you i needed hero gear and tried it but for some reason it got there and f ing downshifted. why did it not hold 4th when i had plenty of wheel speed and enough rpms? do i need a co pilot or something to make it hold 4th? btw i had the overdrived locked out and th on like normal.

Guess you didn't have enough power to hold it so I doubt you really NEEDED it like you think. Not to be rude but given the right setup and right track conditions 4th gear requires more power than your truck makes, not trying to slam you but you should have most likely stuck with 3rd gear.
bogger 09-14-2009, 10:26 PM the trucks that beat me were same hp range and 4th gear. theirs got to the end and lugged it out and mine was still taching high and not making ground speed. i know everyone is a true believer in 3rd gear if you are 500rwhp range but if you look at the dyno sheet for Moonshine it makes peak tq at 2300rpm. and funny enough ive been getting my ass beat for years from a guy that has run 4th gear forever. i know that noone will agree with me on this topic but could you atleast let me know what i need to get mine to stay locked in 4th?
ryan700 09-14-2009, 10:46 PM you need to have some one program trans shift points for 4wd low to suit your needs.
Josh2002cc 09-14-2009, 11:44 PM Maybe your competition is using a converter unlock switch which if that is the case then they could spin out with less power than you. Maybe they have lesser of a tire who knows but what we do know is they are doing something you are not.
ryan700 09-15-2009, 12:29 AM all good points. t/h off no lock up. or just program trans to do what you want it to in 4low and all is good in other patterns.

so i can just have someone tune my tcm so that it will stay in 4th then? i knew that i should think about have the shifting points raised anyway so i'll have that done also.
TNRGreene 09-15-2009, 06:55 AM 4 lo, T/H on, 3rd gear. Forget about boost gauge but get your egts about 700 degrees. It will get you on the charger instantly as you launch it. Practice though it does not take more throttle position to get the egts up just a steady foot. If it starts to push through the brakes let off a little, the egts will still climb. You can feather it that long without walking through the brakes. Let it eat, you will do fine. Good luck
