Will be doing my first oil change soon in my perfect D/A. I used Rotella T 15w40 in my "glad it's gone" Ford PSD. Is this the best oil or do ya'll suggest something different? Thanks.

You will notice select brands used by members here. Some use Amsoil, some use Delvac, some use Rotella, and more oils used that I can't think of off of the top of my head. I use Rotella 5w-30 synthetic. I don't think you can go wrong by picking a decent quality oil. I am sure other will most likely be able to add to the list. Welcome to the place!

It's good oil.

Other good ones as far as dino oil go include Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40 and Chevron Delo 400 Multigrade 15W-40 (now rated CI-4 PLUS). You probably can't go wrong with these. Look for the CH-4/CI-4 API rating.

You might want to stick with the CI-4 PLUS rated oils. The Rottela T is also CI-4 PLUS oil....good stuff.

Then there are the synthetics...

At least the First 10K miles should be with dino oil to get everything burnished in nicely. Then you can switch to synthetics after to stop the wear... I use Mobil Delvac1/Truck & SUV after the break-in.

I recommend the Mobil Delvac 1300 or Chevron Delo 400. Both good oils with good amounts of zinc.

I use Shell Rotella T. I talked to a Royal Purple dealer and he said to stay with dino oil for the first 10k miles or so because the rings will not properly seat with synthetic.

Does anyone use the oil change notification or does everyone just change their oil on a regular mileage basis?

Use a common CI-4 or preferrably CI-4+ rated oil, and your D-Max should serve you for years and hundreds of thousands of miles. My dad and I use Mobil Delvac 5-40W in our 2 D-Max's and Powerstroke along with just about every other diesel on the place.

I really don't think you'll go wrong with Delo, Mobil Delvac or 1300, or Rotella just to name a few of the more common diesel oils.

is the concensus 10K before swithching to synthetic? I thought is was 5K.....It probably depends on your concerns and how you drive/what you use the truck for.

Takin' it easy for the bearings...driving hard for the rings...
When I break in an engine, I pretty much baby it for the first 500 or so miles. After than I drive it hard---lots of downshifts, lots of jackrabbit starts. For diesels I've heard it said that you could hooking it up to a heavy load helps with the break in. On that note probably before towing I would change out the differential fluids--within the first 1K miles. THIS I highly recommend.

For some trucks 10K is hard, for some not so hard. It depends. Some folks might want to wait longer. Then again some engines come from the factory with synthetic motor oil.

The oils mentioned here are good.

I changed oil every 5K miles or so before switching to the synthetic. I do not go by the DIC.

I think looking at some of the threads regarding the LLY EGR are worth mentioning here. Do a search. Basically an EGR has your engine consuming its waste--not healthy for oil...more soot. The EGR is the reason I suggest the CI-4 PLUS oil. You cannot go wrong with an oil with that rating...EGR or not.

I contacted the service manager at 3 large Chevy dealers in the minneapolis area. They all said wait untill 10,000 miles before switching to synthetic motor oil in the dmax!!

The debate on when to switch to synthetics will never cease. I am in the camp that says synthetics can be used when you wish to use them. I use them in high-mileage applications as long as the engines are mechanically sound, and I also tend to switch to synthetics earlier than some suggest. My D-max was switched to Delvac 5-40W at about 6,000 miles because winter was upon me, and I didn't want to be using dino 15-40W at 20 below zero!

For what it's worth, I contacted Terry Dyson of Dyson Oil Analysis, and he assured me that switching to synthetic as early as I did would have no harmful effects whatsoever.

Has any one ran Valvoline Premium Blue?
In case any one is concerned I am using the DIC for oil changes. I am at 7100 miles and 28%. I may change it a little before 0% but not much.

I use Amsoil 15w40 product code AME. I switched @ 1000 miles. So many engines, Harley Davidson, BMW, Cadillac, Corvette, Mercedes and others are factory filled with synthetics that I saw no reason to run more than that. A side note, the fluid in the rear axle is really polluted by 5000 miles and should be changed. I just installed Amsoil 75w90 severe gear lube product code SVG
in both the front and rear axle. SVG meets or excedes GM specs for this application and does not list for $29/quart. www/lubedealer.com/oilrich
