What size are the exhaust manifold bolts on the 8.1l engine? My 01 is missing one and i figure If some one knows i wont have to dink around seeing what seems to fit or getting one from the dealer.

I Think the bolts on the exhaust Manifold for the 8.1 are the same as the 6.0.. I know the heads are 14mm...

Thanks manic, i know i have those on the shelf, makes life easier.

So is the general consensus that this bolt is broke off? One of my buddies that used to work at a chevy stealership and also owns an 8.1L truck says they tend to loosen up and i should check them every oil change or so. I know the 6.0 break em left and right, and when you pull the manifold the remnants of the bolt is typically exposed when you pull the manifolds. In fact i know i need to do my old mans 6.0 before winter comes. So am i gonna find an empty hole or a busted stud?

Trust me, I hope Im wrong.

These are just way small bolts for this application,,,,, now add a bit of rust and there is no material left

Broken bolts are no big deal, even if its recessed an 1/8th of an inch ill get it out with the welder, if it popped the head off it wont be nearly as tight as if it were rusty and someone twisted the head off. I was however hoping to slip a bolt in, tighten it up and be done.

If it does work out that easy for you please let us know. I figure sooner or later it has to happen to at least one of us. LOL

I had a manifold leak on my '01 8.1 and when the dealer went to fix it all the bolts snapped off. Happenned on the other side too a month later. They wound up having to replace one of the manifolds. PITA.

I didnt drive the truck to work today and i had family coming over tonight so i didnt bring a bolt home to bother trying. Ill check tomorrow, and im hoping my buddy is right and it just got loose and rattled out.If the remnants of the bolt are still in there, ill probably just be dealing with the tick for a month or so till i get a bunch of other crap out of the way.

I have done ALOT of broken bolt removal. Ive also done alot of broken bolt/broken ez out in broken bolt/ broken drill bit in a broken easy out in broken bolt removal. So im not scared.

I did my drivers side a few months ago, it started as one missing but I found out it was broken. Ended up with 7 of the 8 broken only one came out and that was after soaking them all for 3 days with pb blaster. Anyway I got one out with vise grips and a torch, but had to drill the other 6 out. If you end up having to drill them out get a right angle drill if you don't already have one. Also those little steel cutter heads for a dremel tool with the flex attachment worked wonders for slightly off center holes, you can carefully grind right to the threads and pull them right out. Also be careful if you have to drill the top middle one, second from the back I think, I went a little too deep and got into the water jacket and broke my bit off and lost it in the water jacket. I sealed the stud I replaced it with and no leaks but I will always wonder were that drill bit is. Sorry this is so long just wanted to share my experience. P.S. I tried weldin nuts to them and grinding slots in them heating them and a lot of other tricks but they were all a wast of time for me. Good luck I hope yours just rattled out.

Miller model 251. But seriously, i work in a machine shop that does alot of repair work. If its a part that some one brought in we would try welding a washer and a nut on it, failing that it usually goes in the bridge port vertical mill. A carbide end mill is one of the few things that has a chance against an ez out. Ez outs are so F ing hard i swear they need there own place on the periodic table. Sometimes when welding to a broken bolt i will drill a hole about half the diameter of the bolt then weld to it, lay some of the weld down into that hole, get the nut spoted on, then without welding the nut to anything but the broken bolt, really fill that nut right up with weld until its red hot. Let it cool just a bit then zap it with some PB blaster, it will usually suck in some of the PB, not let it cool. The expansion and contraction will often times loosen the bolt up some, and if you get enough weld into the hole you drilled it will actually shink the bolt some. Same concept as running a pass of weld on a stubborn bearing race.
