Guys,
I have a 2004.5 duramax (lly engine) that has never diven me a problem in over 202K miles. 10 days ago I was about 200 miles from home and it acted like it was starving for fuel. The engine light came on and it just seemed to be starved for fuel. I was about 5 mile from a Chevy dealer and limped it on in and turned it off. No one was there to read the codes. Thought ok I'll try the NAPA shop to see if they could read the codes. Got in it started like nothing was wrong BUT my fuel gauge was on empty and the fuel warning light was on. Engine light was still on also. Got to the NAPA shop and bought a fuel filter and swapped it out. Started the truck up no engine light and fuel guage was working properly. Now today it did the same thing. Acted like it was starving and the engine light came on. Pulled over turned it off, restarted it and it ran fine, the engine light stayed on and the gauge was on empty with the fuel warning light on. Got home parked it for about 10 minutes and started it engine light not on and the fuel guage was working again. I'm baffled...Anybody go any ideas????

Not to be a smartass... but put some diesel in it?

Can you tell us more about the truck... Ie: any mods or any fuel system work done on the truck?

Both times It had about a half tank of diesel in it when this occured. Its bone stock nothing aftermarket but the ranch hand bumpers front and rear. Been that way since I bought it new in 2004.

Have you read the codes yet??

Your fuel light and gauge condition should have nothing to do with the fuel starving, unless something broke in the tank and the whole assembly is floating around. I cant really see that happening, could someone have shoved something your tank??? Kids??? A rag in the tank hanging things up, plugging the suction and jacking with the sending unit? Let us know.

yes, get the codes read. it's pointless to speculate until you find this out and know what direction to head into.

Had the codes read at AutoZone. The guy said all your injectors went out at once! I kinda doubt that. I'm leaning to something in the fuel tank going on. Filled my tank up last night and now I'm going to see if happens again around a half tank. I have a daily commute of just over 100 miles so by Friday something could happen again.

Check the wiring harness at the alternator-- cut the zip tie strap and inspect the under side for cuts or shorts.

Also check the air filter and clean the MAF sensor.

I'll take a look at these this evening when I get home. All this input is great!

Check the wiring harness at the alternator-- cut the zip tie strap and inspect the under side for cuts or shorts.

Known issue and fits your codes.

Also check the air filter and clean the MAF sensor.

Not applicable if you are using stock filters and havent let a filter fail. You are more likely to do harm than good unless you are carefull.

My comments above. It would still be nice to have a list of the codes. There may be a sneaky one hiding in the wood pile.

sorry to keep repeating this...but did you write down the codes? are they still in the computer? forget what the guy said..just find out what the codes are. there is a plethora of information here if we know what direction to go in to, but right now you are just guessing.

No I did not get a chance the guy at autozone cleared them before I could even get a word out. I was trying to digest how all the injectors could go bad at once and the truck still be running fine. I borrowed a code reader from a buddy of mine so when/if it happens again I will have them.
