Hello all, I have heard this is the place to be if you have a diesel pickup. Always, I am a new owner of a 2007 2500 Classic Duramax and already have a problem I need to discuss. When I purchased it from an individual he said that it needed to be serviced so as I was brining it home a check engine light came on and the Dash read out also said to replace the fuel filter. Once I got home I changed the Oil Filter and Fuel Filter and the check engine light is still on. My questions are: Would the “change fuel filter” message make the check engine light come on? I learned from here how to reset this message and will do it when I get home tonight but I was wandering why the check engine light. I also learned that I need to open up the breather screw at the top of the fuel filter assembly to bleed out any air, I missed that also and will re-prime it tonight with the breeder screw off. I am just wondering if I am missing anything to why this darn check engine light is still on and will it go off by itself if I reset the fuel filter life. If you need codes I could run by AutoZone here in a couple of days and get them for you. Thanks in advance.

edited: OH yeah, everything is stock except for it has straight exhaust and a K&N OEM replacement air filter.

I have never had a check engine light for either filters needing to be replaced. You say it has a K-N air filter on it, if it is the type that you oil, the oil from the filter may have coated the MAF sensor in the air intake and set the code.

I can clean it up with some carb cleaner but I don't believe that is the problem due to the fact that it is idling perfectly and have no performance problem based off of air fuel mixture. I will still take it out and clean it and test its resistance. Thanks again HDpullingpower. Any other ideas on what the fuel filter change message plays in the check engine light. Also, by the way I have 86,000 miles on her already.

There is a special cleaner for mass air flow sensors... make sure you use that, not just a generic carb cleaner, as it could damage the filiment.

Get the codes. No sense guessing at things. At any point if it is an Oiled type air filter get rid of it and buy a good 7 layer filter. Those oiled ones say can be cleaned and reoiled but over time they thin out on the inside and cause problems.

Thanks Brian, I planned on dropping by the Advanced Auto parts store on the way home. Which brand of filter do you use or suggest to use?

Thanks again for all the info so far everyone.

GEt bent..a good idea so you know what you are buying, is to read a study done here a few years ago. Filter Study . Commisioned by "Spicer", one of our memebers here and done by an independant firm. Pretty good information, relevant today and you will be surprised as to the results...especially considering you currently have a K n N in your truck.!

PM me if you like and I'll e-mail to ya..i have it in .pdf format. or do a good search here..it should show up. While you are at it, look for the Fuel Additive study..also very good.!

cheers,

stk

I have an 06' - the K&N Replacement filter set of the MAF codes on a regular basis and the truck ran really bad (MAF did not like the additional flow) - I recommend puttnig the regular filter back in or upgrading to an intake system (these systems relocate the MAF so that it"sees" the right flow).

Thanks Colorado Christian, I plan to take it off as soon as possible. You all are giving me lots of good info here.

Oh by the way, GO CHIEFS...:D

Well, I might have got lucky on this one. After reading yesterday and starting this post I discovered how to reset the fuel filter life (Turn the key on, wait 5 sec., and push the gas and brake pedals together to the floor and hold for 10sec.) did the trick. Not only did it reset my fuel filter life but it got rid of the check engine light too. I didn't go get the codes read since the check engine light went away but just wanted to let you all know that at least on mine (2007 2500HD) the replace the fuel filter DIC message made my check engine light come on as well.

Oh, and yes, I will be taking the K&N out and will probably go with the afe 7 layer air filter. Thanks again everyone for your input on this matter. I am finding this place to be a great forum to learn more and more about my investment in a great truck.

I would still go to the auto store and get the code read. It is still there and be peace of mind to know what it was.
