: BIG PROBLEM! fuel leak.

Today I had to go out of town to pick my boat up and when I left the house I got a wiff of fumes but didn't think anything of it, figured the wind was blowing just right and that was it. but on my way back is when it got worse I'm assuming. I went 150 miles on 1 tank of fuel. I made it home, left it running, and started tracing fuel lines and checked my fuel filter to see if it was loose. Fuel filter was fine, but it was very hard to pin point where it was coming from due to the wind that had blown the diesel residue all over the entire bottom of the truck. Seems to be dripping somewhere around the engine, I am letting it cool off right now so i can get back undernieth it later and feel around and hopefully find something.

I know it's not leaking around the injectors bc it didn't lose any horse power, JUST TONS OF FUEL!!!.lol

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys,

Thanks

look closely at the water sensor in the bottom of the filter...pump the primer a few times and see if she drips...has it had a filter lately?...they get overtightened and crack/strip

also should check the plastic bleeder screw on top of the fuel filter assembly.

Mine did that and turned out to be fuel return line. It's a cloth covered 1/4 inch line on top of valve covers. It has a t-fitting going to each cylinder, and one of them came unclipped from its mating hole.

if the water sensor or bleed screw were cracked or open the truck would die because it would lose it's fuel prime. clearly it stayed running for the entire trip and while idling.

check the fuel return line as suggested above...and the other lines near the tank and such. also the connections on the drivers side where the send and return lines connect.

This is most likely EXACTLY what has happened.
You can rule out anything on the upstream side because unless you have lift pumps your truck will not run! The CP3 Injection pump works off a vacuum... if you have any type of hole upstream of it... your engine will struggle to run.

I would start by checking the injector return lines, I would then move to the main return line connection located on top of the driver side valve cover. It is the smaller fuel line. I would then move back along the frame rail to the fuel cooler, check to see if you have smashed it with a rock or log. Along the way, you will find your leak.

well it was very hard to trace at idle RPM's so i had my gf get in and run it at in between 2500 and 3G while i looked around trying to find it. from what i can find, it is coming out from around an injector, I tried to tighten it up but it didn't budge. Possibly a bad o ring or bad seal???

Head over to your local GM dealership. Have them show you the schematic for an injector. What you will see is a return line that connects to the top of the injector. The return line has a little male nub that connects to the injector, its held on by a clip. I would zero in on that location. Quite possilby the clip has come off somehow.

Ok. I took it in to the dealership today and they said that where the line and the injector connects has gone bad.....

Also, when I had it in there they said that my water pump was going out that it was starting to leak. How hard is it to get to the water pump??? If its not too difficult I will just replace it my self...

Well, if the injector return line gave you trouble I do not suggest tackling the water pump. There is a Waterpump DIY posted in the DIY section. Removing the starter & harmonic balancer can be frustrating at the best of times.

Balancer is easy, its the fan thats a PITA if you don't have the wright tool for it.

check your fuel line by your fuel tank mine rusted out where they snap together just before the lines go into the tank itself. there are metal couplings that snap together. they rusted out. might be the problem

As a matter of fact, that is what it is. Yesterday Chris at Relentless Diesel hooked the EFI Live up to it and we put the Rail pressure at 5000 psi and it was a small drip. we then cranked it up to 15000 psi and it was just pouring out, got one ordered and it will be here in about 4 days. That little bitty ol line is $190!!!!!.lol... I about fell out.
