I didn't see this one after a quick search and might have been talked about but what the heck... I'd post anyway.

While at the dealer I was chatting with the maintenance shop supervisor about my truck's fuel gage is way way off. Never dips below 3/4 tank. When it hits 3/4 tank it will take 20+ gallons. Seem to have worked for the first 1000 miles but started to be off the second 1000. Not good! We'll be getting that fixed soon but what he passed on to me something that I thought I'd pass on here.

He said to make sure you don't fill up the truck with the key on or engine running... ahhh duh ok. Never did that before and didn't plan on it but why I asked. Seems it won't reset the fuel gage and it will then be stuck on 'E' forever and you'll have to bring the truck in for a reprogram. They had a few come in with that problem already. I chuckled and made the mental note to avoid the issue.

I have filled up with the engine running a few times. Diesel is not a dangerous fuel in that respect. Many commercial drivers never turn the engine off at the pump.

Anyways if it is cold out, and no gasoline pumps are nearby I will leave the engine running. Some people up here will leave thier cars running while they are doing thier grocery shopping.

I have not had any of the trouble that you describe, but I have noticed that the guage will take a long time to return to the full mark after doing so. By contrast when you turn the engine off the guage will read full almost instantly after you start.

Good info GMC, I will keep this in mind. --SS

I almost always refuel with the engine running. The gage takes a long time to return to 'full', but I've never had a problem. Besides the truck is still blowing nice warm air in the winter.....(or A/C in the Summer).

Oh I should point out that was on my 04. I don't know if that problem carries over to other years.

Understood about the flammability of the fuel it's just I'd probably lock my self out of my truck some time... :)

Hey, I gotta bridge for sale too. I can reprogram your truck over the internet for the gauge not working, just start a thread and send me 10 bucks and I will take care of that for yahttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Wait a min. I need to upgrade my virus software in my truck before we get started... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I had a really good laugh the first time I was told.. "Yea bring your truck on down and we'll reflash the computer" Oh dear god! Coming from my line of work that was just to funny.

That's Hockey... I never turn mine off while fueling and now that I have my Transferflow 70-Gallon tank it fills up the tank while driving down the road...Go figure.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Same here, filled out of a 110 gal. tank in the back with a transfer pump, never had a problem. Ask your rocket scientist where he got that from and how it ruins the gauge.

In all seriousness, there are abilities to reprogram the modules in todays vehicles. The only effect on fueling while the truck is running is the gauge is slow to return to full.

valid points guys... I think I'll hit them up when I return to get my fuel gage fixed. Mine has never dropped off full for the last three fill ups. And they have been between 20-15 gallons of fuel taken on board. Not happy. Oh well.

I don't think that you can lock yourself out of your truck while it's running. I TRIED to lock mine the other day while it was running (and BTW, I was fueling http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif), and the driver's door would always unlock with the engine running...

I don't know if there's something wrong with it, or it's supposed to be that way. It's not really a problem though, unless I wanted to leave it running in a parking lot UNATTENDED, and I would never do that with this truck. I used to do that all the time with my Dodge, but no one ever stole it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif I don't really want this truck stolen, so I won't leave it running unattended...

I know my 01 is programmed so it will not lock the drivers door while the key is in the ignition. This is supposed to be this way. A lot of newer vehicles are programmed this way to prevent locking of the drivers door. Ya know there are some people out there that just forget to take their keys out of the ignition and lock the door and by the time the door clicks, they are saying OH $H!T. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif Now they don't have to worry. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Seems auto industries are thinking of the people problems while making their designs rather then vehicle problems. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif

I always fuel w/ the motor running. I can't lock my doors w/ the truck running and the door open. As soon as I hit the lock it locks then unlocks, click click. I have however locked the keys in the truck w/ the truck running. I think I had hit the door lock prior to putting the key in and starting the truck.

I fuel up with the motor running too and as well from my aux fuel tank. I think you have a bad ground on your fuel tank and the mechanic hasn't got a clue what to look for.

LOCKOUT PROTECTION - will not allow the driver's door to stay locked after hitting the lock button if the key is in the ignition, running or not. It will, however, allow it to lock with the key halfway out of the ignition as I found out the hahttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gifrd way!

Remove your remote and you can then use your remote to lock the door.I leave my keys and remote seperate for this reason.

About the lockout thing....isn't On-Star on all the new trucks?

CMC-GMC
12-29-2003, 06:40 PM
First thing I did when I got home was de-program the locks so I was the only thing that made them operate. Except the lockout feature where it won't lock the door when the key is in the ign. I keep the remote separate from the keys so in the AM I go fire her up then close the door, hit the remote lock and go inside. Yea I know I could put a starter on but that cost money and I like the fresh air. (Remember I live in Tucson so it's only 20-30deg out in the morning)

That leads me to a comment I made to GM. I think it would be nice that when I'm purchasing a $40K vehicle that I would get asked just how I would like all my options set before I take ownership of it. Seems easier to program them in via the puter than me in the driveway fiddling with the controls. Who knows what else I screwed up while trying to set how I want the door locks.

Oh and do those settings stay if I get the trucks puter reset at the dealer?

No OnStar in my truck. It's usually in all the trucks on the lots around here, but I ordered mine without it. I think OnStar may be standard on the LT's and SLT's.

I ususally leave mine running when I'm filling up.

I like the keyless entry working with the engine running!! Only thing better is when my 90 pound Chesapeake Bay Retriever is in the truck I leave the doors unlocked cause nobody will get in!

I ordered mine with onstar, only wish I would have gotten XM also!

Duck hunter,

In My opion, you aren't missing anything without XM radio. We got it on ours that came off the lot. Not impressed with the channel selections or the quality of sound. The CD Player is much better than the XM Radio for sound quality, and listen to what ever you want. XM would only be worth while for me if I lived somewhere remote that didn't have any FM Stations available. The FM Stereo sounds at least as good as the XM.

cmc The salesman at your dealer dropped the ball on that, he should be going over the truck with you making sure your aware of what its capable off, and how to change it. The dealer wont be messin em up unless they replace the ipc or the bcm. other then that, they should stay put.

They told me about the settings and that I could change them if I wanted to and that it was all in the book. It's just that I feel it would be nice that while I was filling out the paperwork for a $40K vehicle I could check a few boxes so that when they drove the truck around front after a wash and fuel fill it would have those settings I wanted. That's all.

And thanks on the IPC BCM info. Nice info to know.

Of course a CD's sound quality is going to better than XM, it is not being transmitte. The only thing I do not like about XM is when ever I am stoped under a bridge I loss reception. But not being imoressed with the music selection?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif If you can not find a formate in XM with close to 100 channels something is very wrong.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif I have not since I have had XM turned into a FM station.

I love my XM just my 2c....I can not see myself with out it now....gotta love the lack of commercials and dumb ass DJs.

Glad you like it! I do Love the lack of commercials, but still get an occasional commercial for XM showing up on all the chanels yet http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif . With XM 1 and XM 2 there are about 160 channels now right? For me, I feel like I am sitting infront of my TV with 100 cable chanels and still nothing I want to watch.....Perhaps I am spoiled! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif Maybe it will grow on me? Maybe if they had some classic rock chanel or some decent country? I would rather have spent the $325 on some decent shocks or secondary filter.

I couldn't agree more. When I bought my Mini Cooper S, they sent me a questionnaire that asked me exactly how I wanted my remotes set up and even what radio stations I wanted programmed. Didn't seem like it was that hard for them to do it. . . wonder what it would take for GM to do the same. . .

tech assist has told me the same regarding filling up and fuel guage. when i was a tech in new mexico we had dozens of fuel guage problems guys would be half way between towns say 400 miles and say 1/4 tank to pass the station and know its 75 miles to the next well they would get 15 miles out to have the truck stall. evey time the tank was bone dry. we foud the fuel level sensors coated with a film black and sooty. after about 100 or so gm sent engineer out to take samples and look at all the level sendors. they concluded that there was a excessive amount of sulfer in the fuel. now i have also had 3 or 4 duel tanks come in with the guage inop.
tech assist stated tat while fueling the pcm sees the level i have been told that some how the pcm kind of freeks out with the rapid change of fuel and sends a signal to the guage at the cluster to go empty. or when fueling on duel tanks while running if you fill the front tank the fuel transfer pump will try to move fuel from the rear to front. if rear is empty it will send a signal to the guage as empty . yes it sounds all greek but dont be suprised if the guage one day falls to empty and your out for your warrenty. in the times this habbens i have needed to reprogram the ipc.

srode, that is true...I do not like the commercials that will pop-up. Kinda pisses me off...why am I paying to listen to a commercial. But on the bright side it is only one commercial compaired to 5mins of them. They have the "Bone Yard" but that is more like the Metal Hair bands of the 80s. The country is kinda weak also.
