I recently bought a used 6 gun w/speed loader off a fellow DP member and went to install it today. When I bought it I didn't get a pyrometer probe so I ordered one from banks. Well I had time on my hands today so I did the install. Basically the worst part of the install was cramming the wires throught the rubber boot. That was a PITA. Other than that it was pretty simple. Anyhoo I did not install the speedloader because I don't have the pyro probe yet. I figured I would just run the six gun alone until I got the probe, then install it at a later date. Well I learned something new today, after all of the searches I have done here I haven't seen this one yet. Since the six gun had been previously run with the spd/ldr it will NOT run without it again. So point of the story, if you buy a used one from someone, don't expect it to work with out all of the proper components.:(

Well I got done installing the 6 gun and since I still had time on my hands, I also haven't seen any other switch mounts other than recommended banks location,(except for mr. & mrs. spoolin') so I got to thinkin. I came up with my own switch mount. I can remove it very easy(only 2 sheet metal screws) if I need to go in for service, and no holes in my dash (no evidence). Made it out of aluminum and polished it up to shine.

So thats my story and here are the pics:ro)

Well that is what the banks tech told me, I guess I will find out when I get my pyro and speedloader hooked. Knock on wood, I hope it works then.

rolloffhill,
It will run without it. It just needs to be reprogrammed so it knows it's not there. It's done as such:
a.) Key the ignition ON.
b.) Turn the Six-Gun switch to level 6 and stay for 5 seconds.
c.) Rotate the switch to level 1 and stay there for 5 seconds.
d.) Rotate the switch again to level 6 and stay there for 5 seconds.
e.) The GREEN LED will flash twice as soon as the Speed-Loader is learned and each time the module is powered.

This sequence lets the Six-Gun check to see if the Speed-Loader is installed or not and adjusts itself accordingly.

Ingition on, running or not? Did some searches here and it said turn to level 1 start truck, leave on 5 sec, lvl 6 5 seconds, then back to lvl 1 5 seconds. Tried that multiple times.

Just tried that TT didn't work. The pryo probe was previously used on this unit, and since I don't have one installed yet it just keeps throwing that code. (no pyrometer detected)

Ignition on but not running. I know it works because I played with it myself when first installing mine. If you try it a couple more times and still no luck, I'd contact banks and ask for a local rep to verify your unit still works properly. See if there is a way to reset the unit back to non-used status. This should allow you to start with a clean slate.

It will work....... I just took mine out for its visit to the doctor. If you do as TT stated it will tell the 6gun that the speedloader isnt there.

Looks good. I like not having it permanently mounted, not a big fan of drilling holes in our truck if they are not needed. :)

Once you have the speedloader installed, you have enough wire length to mount the speedloader in place of the cigarette lighter in the center console (if you have bucket seats). That's where I put mine and it has worked great. I just unhooked the wires for the cig lighter and taped them off to avoid a short. The actual cig unit stays in the glove box in case I ever need to remove the sixgun when on a trip.....

You need to remove the speedloader (just unplug it) if you don't have a thermocouple hooked up. When you install the thermocouple, plug the speedloader in and follow the steps TT outlined.

I got the thermocouple yesterday and got it in today, I had no luck making the 6 gun work with out the speedloader and without the thermocouple installed. But all is well know, I got everything in and I love it.:ro) Given I have nothing to compare it to, but I have been driving this truck for 96k and about 3 years without it. I love the extra power, and No I don't want to hear from you edge guys! I don't care about racing and how much more power the edge has than the banks, I like it and that is what matters. I like having the extra HP's for passing and for towing. As far as smoking, well it may not smoke as much as edge, but who cares, it still smokes and that is cool. I have my mirror set on the exhaust tip so I can see it smoking.:D

Mrsspoolin

How did ya'll install your switch, I saw the location but could not figure out how it was installed.

Fred G

I actually thought about the cig lighter location, as I have the two extra power outlets, but what I made was easier, but that doesn't mean I can't move it in the future. This mount worked for me for the time being and I like the way it looks. So I probably won't move it, but I like the idea.

TT & neverenuf

You are correct I CAN remove and reinstall the speedloader, BUT not until I got the thermocouple installed, it kept throwing the "thermocouple not installed" code, but now everything is great.:)

Thanks again to everyone who has EVER posted info on the banks system, as it has helped me with saving time and headache.

I love this site!!!!!!:ro) :grd:

ST made a bracket that fits on the CB mount. I took some better pictures for you. The top is just kinda wedged up there.

I'm sure I speak for everyone, but it's our pleasure to assist! Glad you like the new toy. Just be forwarned though, levels 5-6 with the speedloader WILL smoke the trans if your not careful. And even then it could happen. Since you already have the exhaust and you bought this for extra HP's and towing, you might want to also look at Super Diesels water/Meth system. Plan on getting it myself. Not necessarily for the HP (I'll admit it's a nice bonus), but for the reduction in EGT's. Especially while towing.

Since I got it finished,(about 3:00) I have gone out on a "test drive" about 4 times now. I love it!:ro) I have put it in 6 just at take off to "smoke" on launch. I guess I better cut that out.:( I guess driving around I will use lvl4, and towing lvl 2-3 depending on how heavy it is. I gotta pic up my wife tonite at the airport, I'm pretty sure I'll be taking my truck and leaving the yukon at home.:D

rolloffhill,
If your interested in knowing, I cruise around in level 3 and tow in 2-3 (see trailer weight) depending on the route. Level 6 does get activated for those surprise attacks and required smoke sessions though.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif

So TT I remember reading that your tranny is stock, how much do you run it in Level "Kill". And how hard do you push it?

Let's just say that I'm amazed that I haven't had to see MikeL. yet! (knock on wood!)

Level 6 gets used maybe once a week, but more for smoke than killing.
When killing is on the agenda, I don't hold anything back. I do feel it back down during shifts if I haven't given the trans time to learn. That seems to happen pretty quick though.

Cruising at level 2 for me.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/cool2.gif That rocks! I assume that you are mounting the dial there and not the little speedloader box.

Yes the 6G switch/dial is in the cig lighter loaction. The SL module is just above & behind the lower dash panel, below the steering column.

Regarding L5/L6, I tried L5 once and thought I could hear the trans screaming. L3 is my normal setting (if you can call any of this "normal") and L4 is my go-to for "intended acceleration". The truck felt dang fast on L5 though. I hoping to upgrade the trans one of these days and then the real fun will begin.

I think I found another place to mount it today, I can't post pics right now(motel dial-up-:t 26.4) In the center console to the right of the change holder, it looks like an accesory knock out for another cig. lighter. If you put it there you could lock the console without removing the switch. I will post pics when I get home for those of you without center consoles to look at.
