: lp pulling mpg increases
fredw 05-17-2005, 07:19 PM l did some lp pulling in the last two days, with the westers tune and found out even with an 200 plus tune i could still feel a noticable increase in tq when lp was turned on, egt incresed about 60 to 100 degrees for a second or so after, and then boost came down a bit with lower egts to follow
as for mileage i was surprised to notice an increase of 2.8mpg with lp on, this was done with the dic(average mpg) compared to lp being turned off each done over a 40 mile stretch at 76 mph(9k trailer), over all mileage was noticablely better than normal
a reminder that egts would have to be held in check if others try this:eek: would work great with wi if one had a 50 gallon water tank:lol:
the powershot is looking good so far
dozerboy 05-17-2005, 10:40 PM Hey Fred
What MPG are you getting with just the westers there is some troll saying they are getting 27? Other than that, how do you like it well mannered, can it be detected at the stealer, got any dyno #s for us?
Thanks
David Schear 05-18-2005, 03:06 AM I'm interested in the MPG also. Someone said that they were getting around 30 on the highway.
fredw 05-18-2005, 03:25 AM as for mileage, i can tell you about two months ago on winter fuel, was the last time i checked the mileage, it was on a level road, done at 72mph with lp(200 mile strech), and westers, it hand calulated out to be 22.5mpg (us) or about 25cdn, i have seen these numbers before on summer fuel only, so there numbers are not to far off
as far with my pulling mph gains, powershot felt that those gains were possible, this summer will tell the story when we go for a few weeks with the trailer
marcdeluca 05-18-2005, 11:39 AM I'm the one getting around 30 mpg. It varies between about 28 and 32, all depends on the type of driving and speed. My setup seems to increase the proportion of lp to diesel the higher the load goes. In other words, I get better diesel mileage at 70 mph than 60. It's all about BTUs, the more lp you stuff in, the less diesel it takes to do the job. Just depends on what fuel you want to buy more of, and how much it costs.
David Schear 05-19-2005, 12:46 AM What lp system are you using?
marcdeluca 05-19-2005, 10:44 AM I am using an Impco Model E vaporizer/regulator with a Century filterlock. These components are used on gasoline engine conversions, and are readily available and gives you modulated flow. I didn't want a system that just dumped in fuel at a certain boost pressure. Mine starts delivering lp at very low engine load, and increases flow as you give more throttle. It is seamless and works great. The engine sucks the fuel in rather that going in under pressure. The fuel enters just ahead of the turbo in the plastic air pipe.
leesnuts 06-10-2005, 05:53 PM So does the truck's computer dump the same amount of fuel into the cylinder? I assume that there is less diesel going into the cylinder which increases mileage.
IdahoRob 06-10-2005, 07:41 PM You don't need as much peddle to get the same amout of work done. Less peddle equals less diesel being used. Computer doesen't know pane is there. But the trans might.

marcdeluca 06-14-2005, 08:50 PM I just got back from a trip. Before the trip I removed the K&N air filter after reading all the bad stuff about it on the forum, and reinstalled the factory element. I noticed the truck was touchy on the throttle. Ended up needing to cut back on the lp some. Apparently the K&N does flow better, because the truck is now pulling more lp than before. Ended up getting 39 mpg on diesel. Don't know how much more lp it used than usual. It is definitely using more lp than diesel now. Got 1135 miles on 29.1 gal, which is B20 bio. This is about the limit on mine, because at heavier throttle positions I was getting a bit of pinging until I cut the lp back.
fredw 06-14-2005, 11:43 PM wow that is some great mileage, i ran a 400mile trip last weekend towing the 9k trailer, and lp made a 2.5mpg advantage, also was seen on the dic
David Schear 06-15-2005, 12:00 AM marcdeluca,
What size lp tank are you using?
marcdeluca 06-15-2005, 10:43 AM My tank is 110 gal water capacity, I can get right at 100 gal of lp in it.

Diesel Addict
Hey where do you mount the parts? Could we get some pictures of the setup? What turns it on and off?

Hmmm. I'll bet if you triple the amount of lp you use, you could end up with 80 MPG, measuring only the diesel you use. For that matter, if you convert to lp, you'll get infinite mileage on #2 (you won't use any). Now, if you were to report the miles per BTU, perhaps you'd have a number that makes sense.
marcdeluca 06-20-2005, 06:31 PM You are correct about consuming the same BTUs/mile. But when the lp is $1.09/gal and diesel is $2.33, the more lp I use the more I save per mile.

Have you been able to calc your Diesel to Lp Gallons per mile?
marcdeluca 06-21-2005, 10:50 AM Here is a link to another page that has some pics of my setup. It has a toggle switch under the dash, but I rarely use it. It is a demand regulator that increases fuel as suction increases on the turbo inlet. It gives no fuel at idle, and starts to give fuel at light load. When I was getting 31 mpg on diesel, I was getting 30 mpg on lp. Now that the diesel mileage has increased, I haven't had a chance to recheck the lp mileage. It is a hassle because I have to weigh a small bottle before and after fill, and hook it up when I do the test. It'll happen one of these days.
