: Trans service from hell
Bartman432 08-26-2009, 10:39 PM I took my truck in the other week for a "simple" trans service, i.e. both external and internal filters changed and the trans filled with synthetic fluid. This "reputable" place is where my local Chevy dealership uses for all maint. and warranty repairs. I thought I was in good hands turning over my transmission to this business after having been rebuilt 20,000 miles ago by Mike L from Inglewood Transmissions. I have a lot of money invested in this trans. The following day, I took the truck and my 5th wheel trailer on a trip for the week. During this time, my transmission on two occasions would not go into gear and would act like it was in neutral. It only occurred after initial start up and then would go away. I talked to Mike L., who advised it sounded like a fluid problem. I checked the fluid level and observed it to be so low that it would barely register on the dipstick low cool mark. I checked the external filter and learned it was some Chinese made piece of crap and not the genuine Allison filter I was led to believe I had purchased. It gets better, I call the place who serviced the trans and asked them if they put in the deep sump filter. The guy who remembered me advised they did not. I was fricking livid. I wanted to strangle him through the phone. Needless to say, I found a local genuine Allison service department from their website and am getting the correct filters for my truck. A little advice, don't trust these clowns with your truck. As Mike L. told me, they will cut corners on replacement parts to make an extra buck, and watch them when they pull your pan to make sure they actually do the work they were hired to do. :banghead:
rgullett83 08-26-2009, 10:47 PM Sorry to hear that, it is hard to find a reputable shop to perform quality work
Bartman432 08-26-2009, 11:01 PM I knew I was stupid to go there, when Mike's shop is only a 45 minute drive from my home. Oh well, I know there will be no questioning where to take it next time......
Dirtbikindad393 08-27-2009, 02:15 AM Yep with Mike so close its a no brainer now that this has happened. You know Mike will take care of you right. Sorry that happened. Now that you have proper filters and correct fluid level did the issue go away?
NelsonDiesel 08-27-2009, 03:13 AM what is the name of this place?
Bartman432 08-27-2009, 11:38 PM "Certified Transmissions" in Upland CA. First thing in the morning I went to an Allison Transmission service/dealership located in Mira Loma, about 15 minutes from my house and got both filters for $30.00. Took the correct filters to Certified, who I watched remove my pan and replace both Chinese filters and put in the good stuff. Then I watched them add no less than 3 additional quarts of synthetic trans fluid. Just like Mike said, it was a fluid issue. With that deep pan I have, those boneheads didn't bother to accurately check the level when they were done servicing it. Oh well, there was no harm done to the trans and a lesson was well learned.
rhadiesel 08-30-2009, 04:21 PM thats why i take my truck to mike L for any fluid changes and filters
jbcox43 08-30-2009, 05:07 PM Problems like this is why I do all the routine services myself.

I thought the Allison took much more than 3 qts when the pan is dropped.
Horsehaulin 08-30-2009, 10:52 PM I believe he was talking about tehe additional three quarts of the deep pan.
wreedLBZ 08-30-2009, 11:01 PM It does take 7.4 qts when the pan is drained and external filter changed correct? I am gonna do mine soon.

There's one to ponder as well. I would bet those 'tards that screwed it up the first time took off the old filter and threw it out with the filter.
